Sticky Odometer and Trip Odometer finally fixed on my FZJ80

Hello LTrain,
thank you!
I actually meant the fixation of the small trip meter shown in the picture above - as part of the full Speedo Cluster. You are right, the full cluster is fixed with small screws.
But how to get out the trip meter from it? Via the front, I.e. removal of the needle?
Once you have the unit removed from the gauge cluster, pry off the needle and remove the two small screws holding the printed face of the speedo. Then to separate the trip meter from the unit, release the clips as shown in the original post. That should give you access to deal with the gears and the broken part

As noted in my previous posts, there can be some trial & error to get the needle back in the correct position to show accurate speed.

Thanks, LTrain & Spenser,
looking at your photos and explanations, I dared to lift off the needle - very helpful!
What I found:
- axis for the 4 gears (blue pointer) has not only the broken part, but is also bent => this is why only the white and the first black roller are moving
- this "hook" at the reset rod (orange pointer) - I think I will cut this off, like you say above, it just adds load on the mechanism
- cool side benefit: I could clean those rollers (the white one was very greyish, now is white again) and remove the disintegrated sticky foam from the reset rod
- repair: I think I will firstly glue it together to get it fixated. And then put strands of carbon fiber with resin over it as reinforcement.

What did you guys do to avoid re-breaking?

Cheers from Germany!

Sounds like your repair will be more thorough than mine was. I scuffed the mating surfaces and used a high-strength plastic-specific superglue. It worked well for what it was, but I had to be conscious of being gentle when resetting the trip meter. The one time I forgot to do so, it ended up breaking again, and I didn't bother to repeat the repair.

Haven't tried it myself on the odo but looking at how some broken/cracked plastic parts are "hot stapled" together using a plastic "welder", I wonder if pushing a red hot small/short metal bar ie: the thickness of the wire from a small paper clip, into the plastic to bridge the fracture to add strength to the repair might help??

I glued it with superglue and it broke, then I made a bandage from an aluminum plate (2-2.5 mm) and secured it with epoxy glue - it has been working for many years.

Got photos?
I don't have a photo, but I did it 10 years ago. I pulled out the axle and removed the lever, and marked the outline on the plate (using drills, a round file, and a vise). I drilled and sawed it out so it would fit snugly, and then filed down the outline on the outside to leave a sufficient wall. Then I sanded the lever around it and coated the sides with epoxy to keep the plate from shifting laterally from the center.

Need to come back to this thread I have 2 broken trip odometers
Trip is broken on mine too. Odometer is fine. For years I’ve told myself “just leave well enough alone”. Haha

I like having the trip meter though
