I’ve never seen the puller used. Ever.

Loosen the nut about 3 turns, smack the wheel a few times around its diameter with the heel of your hand. If it’s still stuck, hit it harder, Sally.
Fair enough. I used a puller, but YDY.

While I've never pulled a Toyota steering wheel, I have on multiple old Chevy's and sometimes you need a puller and sometimes a good smack around the rim works. Just depends, but a puller can be rented at no cost, just a deposit, from any auto parts store. I regret buying mine because now I have to store it for the one time every 10 years it comes in handy 🙄

Installed the Heritage Edition 45100-60760-C5. The Bronze stitching is a nice pairing with the Terra leather.

Also coated it with Colourlock Leather Shield, which is specifically intended for the protection of new leather against abrasion and friction - which seems like the exact use case for this compared to other leather conditioners. Instructions say to reapply every 3-6 months. Hopefully this also helps mitigate future deterioriation.

how much does a fresh HE wheel set you back? JW

The OEM replacement wheel is holding up nicely so far and wearing in as expected. The leather feels identical to the 2021 heritage edition I had before my 2016. The jury is still out on how the newer wheels are holding up, but I haven’t seen any posts or complaints so far on the 2020 and 2021 model years.

I’m surprised your 2019 is having flaking issues, as I thought they remedied that after the 2016-2017 model year?

For the extra $300, I would buy OEM. Just wait until Toyota is having their 20% off parts deal and buy it then. Leather covers make the steering wheel thicker and I am not a fan of that, and you will always feel that unnatural transition point from the wood to leather being underneath with a leather cover.
Checking to see how your OEM steering wheel replacement is holding up? I am about to replace mine. thx!

I'm starting to think that the peeling is caused by exposure to direct sunlight through the windshield. I know it's not caused by hand sanitizer or rings. After I replace I'm probably going to install a 95% ceramic layer to windshield and sunroof. Makes no sense otherwise except if leather is too thin or poor quality.

My truck has been garaged since new, and the original leather was a disaster. The replacement wheel discussed on this thread, on the other hand, has held up perfectly. The original is thin leather with poor durability. I am doubtful that a ceramic coating will make any difference at all. Get the all leather wheel, with the more durable leather, and this problem will be solved.

I have had ceramic tint on my windshield at 34k miles 5 years ago. My LC lives inside the garage. No peeling wheel like everyone else on my 18.

I have the tint and a garage and my wheel pealed.

None of my other cars wheels peeled just the LC200.

Toyota should have took care of this on a premium vehicle and they did not.

Just to confirm, part number 45100-60760-C5 is for the heritage edition wheel? I found one that says the stitching is beige…I assume the that is the ivory mentioned in an earlier post. It will also have wood on the top and bottom correct?

Thanks!

Mine has been garaged too from day one but sits in the sun at work. I'm not talking about ceramic coating the wheel but a ceramic window film to prevent UV rays from breaking down the leather. Yes when I do replace I will upgrade the entire wheel and not just a leather wrap.

I’m not discouraging anyone from having ceramic applied to their windshield, I imagine it will reduce UV degradation of the dash and interior. But I strongly believe the problems with the leather steering wheel on 2016-2021 LC200’s have nothing to do with UV exposure. Nor is it hand soap, lotion, sweat or sanitizer. It is soft, delicate leather that cuts easily and eventually peels. The all leather replacement wheel is much more durable.

Seems like multiple people have replaced their wheel with the heritage edition wheel. I guess if you do that, you just plan to replace it again in 5-7 years when it starts peeling? Or is there some sort of hope that Toyota fixed the issue with that wheel?

If I ever have to replace my steering wheel, I feel like I’d take my chances with the all leather OEM wheel, since (to my knowledge) there haven’t been any reports of leather peeling on that one.

I tend to agree. I’ve had my ‘14 since the beginning and it looks 5x better than my wife’s ‘20.

2021 LC with ~60k miles. I'm second owner (first was in CA), but the car has windshield tint and a peeling wheel. It won't be garage kept, but I'm thinking of replacing with a new wheel and doing something like GYEON Leather Shield ceramic coating to help protect against chemical (hand sanitizer) and UV abuse.
