OK - the axle issue - oil seals are gone - apparently. Bit of the black gooey in with the brakes when I checked the rt rear. I've talked to a couple folks and looked at yotatech and the info is pretty split on doing just the seals - or seals & bearings. Yotatech has some good info w/pictures for the seals but the bearings have to go to a shop to be pressed on & off. My local Toyota dealer wants $560 to do it.
Looking for thoughts - experience - etc...

I don't want to clutter the 'trip' forum with tech stuff, but I'm getting ready to do my front axle service (waiting on parts from CDan now - should arrive tomorrow or Thursday). If your dealer will do the whole front axle service *correctly* for $560 I'd go for it. The parts alone with the mud discount are ~$300 plus fluids and the three dealers I spoke with (Fusz, Ackerman, and Feld) all quoted $1,200 for the job including parts. I did find one Toyota mechanic who also owns an 80 that said he would do it on the side for $200 if I supply the parts and fluids.

I'm guessing that price is not for the full front axle service outlined in the 80-tech section under the FAQ, but I'd be curious to know (b/c I might have them do mine :)).

ON EDIT: Thinking about this some more and reading your post a bit closer, are you talking about the front axle or the rear axle? Also, I made the mistake of assuming you are talking about the 80 series - is that correct? Sorry for the assumptions

The seals are easy to replace. The hardest part about the whole job is bleeding the brakes. However, I would say that if you have over 100k miles on it then I would go ahead and have the bearings replaced too. Make sure you only let a Qualified Toyota mechanic or someone who has vast experience with Toyotas replace the bearings -- I've seen this job screwed up more than once.

You can call Victor's off road in Arnold (Kind of far away for you). He works on nothing but Toyota 4x4's and he's replaced the bearings on more than one of my Toys. He uses all factory Toyota Parts. His website is www.victorsoffroad.com .

Sorry I missed you. I was there. I was waiting downstairs because there were a few of my friends there. I went upstairs to check a few times and didn't see anyone. Brian showed up at about 8:00 but I never saw anyone else. I was dissappointed because I attended the TAC event at FlatNasty a few weeks ago and want to talk about it. I wish we were as organized as the people on the other side of the state.

I guess were still planning on same time and day next month but it always seems that everyone has something come up at the last minute and can't make it. I don't have anyones email address Brian does so I can't send any reminders before the next mtg.

I have a partial e-mail list of the people who replied to this thread that I pulled off of the list put together by Jester(Josh) the only addresses that I know are missing are yours (toyminator's) and Miescha's. I dont want to post the list but if you send me an e-mail I'll add you to the list and send you what I have. my e-mail is edgewrks@gtec.com

Hopefully we can get a little better organized. Tom

Pretty good assumptions. I"m talking about the rear axle on a 2000 4Runner

Toyminator - that's what I was looking for - i've got 110K in the 4Runner. Got the 565 quote from my local dealer (Papas) - but i've never dealt with them and dont have any feel for their experience

I'll send my email to both of you (actually, I think Toyminator may already have it).

Yep - truck details are key :)

Still, sorry for the assumptions, and I hope you get it worked out. I'll be doing my '96 FZJ80 front axle service myself next week - parts just arrived late today from CDan.

Can we set up a Directory, so we all know what is going on. Right now, we can see if we can become a sub-chapter of tornado alley cruisers, and then maybe get our own charter in the future, when we have enough people who have learned the leadership roles. I will be happy to work on this.
I know we had another gentleman try to start this, and it was not successful. I think if we get the information out to enough people, the right ones will get it done. As for me, I would love to make it to more meetings, but with work, it's hard. However I have run into several individuals who I will now refer over to this page. Please let me know. I can begin a database.

Nov 1 @ Sybergs

Are we meeting next Thursday - NOV 1 ?? :) Thought I'd check before I drive 42 miles to be by myself again.

Tommy-d: Sorry again about last month - it was the only meeting I've missed and though I posted that I would be gone, I still feel bad that you didn't find anyone when you arrived.

I have it on my calendar and I'll be there barring any unforseen emergency. I'll have my 80 with me and its pretty much ready to go for the Nov 3 (Saturday) trip to Flat Nasty. I think we have four 80s and a 4-runner committed at this point (maybe a Jeep too, but I guess that doesn't count :D ). I can start a new thread for trip and confirmation of those planning to attend.

ON EDIT: New Thread here https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=2671084#post2671084

Back to the Nov 1 meeting, I don't know if we have an agenda, but I propose that, among any other items that arise on their own, we discuss starting a TLCA chapter in St. Louis vs connecting with the TAC chapter in Kansas City. I also wouldn't mind discussing my recent (very successful) front axle rebuild or the common problem of brake line bleeding in the 80 series. Maybe also some discussion of radio options for trail communication (basically CB vs some form of Ham).

See you all next Thursday (if you survive the Halloween madness).

I can't make the meeting next week, I have to go out of town on business, but I will send out the contact list this weekend as a reminder.

Miescha - I don't have your E-mail address yet.

I like the idea of starting a TLCA chapter in St. Louis. I hope to see everyone in December, Tom

Hey people. Good to see the interest in starting a TLCA chapter. I went through the process about a year ago and am now the President of Tall Corn Cruisers and the TLCA National Secretary. We are actually having a meeting tonight for the TLCA Board of Directors and I'll tell the Central Rep (Jeff Zepp) about your interest. If one of you could PM your information, I'll pass it along. In the mean time, if you look at the docs here
http://tlca.org/clubs/chapter_startup.shtml
which you may have already, it's a good start. If you need any help, or have questions, please let me know.

Happy Cruisin!

I've looked through those documents - pretty straight-forward stuff. I'll send you my info via PM, but long term extremetoy1 or toyminator may be the better 'point-person' as they are more knowledgeable about all things gear-head ;) I'm just interested in getting the thing going.
