has anyone removed the questions in this thread with the answers into a separate thread?

every search i do in this 200 section comes back to this thread...lol
someone with mad excel skills err sumthin?

I did this as well (based on your earlier post) and I approve of this solution. My ram mount ends up with my phone sitting above hte vent but the edge rests on my dash so it doesn't vibrate. There's plenty of track to add another phone mount and a GoPro mount, possibly a 4th mount too. I'm quite pleased.

Bad pictures in the dark. The further back picture is roughly my eyesight when driving, so the devices do not block my view over the hood. Devices I use, phone, Garmin inReach Mini, Garmin Overlander GPS.

Anyone have recommendations for replacement HID bulbs for a 2013-2015? Mine have been flickering occasionally but the driver's side was doing it even when sitting still at a traffic light. I tried a set of the DMEX 6k bulbs, which are $30 on Amazon, and they are worth every penny of the $30... but not much more. Light seems bright when pointed at a wall but it's definitely considerably lower output when they shine down my alley. I may buy the Philips Xtremevision Gen2 bulbs, but I'm hoping there's something offering OEM or better performance that doesn't cost me $200 per pair. (Also the Philips are hard to come by right now for some reason).

On the plus side the flickering is gone, so at least I know it was the bulbs and not the ballasts.
Figured I'd reply back to myself for posterity.

I tried the $30 DMEX HIDs from Amazon. They're decent and if you're strapped for cash they'll work, though I'd recommend getting the 4500-5000K color. Up close they seem bright. Cut-off was fine. They didn't seem as bright as the OEM bulbs at a distance (shining down my alley), but I think that might be due to the fact that they are 6k bulbs so the blue-ish light doesn't seem as bright at a distance.

Because I wanted *better* than OEM, I ended up ordering a set of Philips Xtreme Vision. Cost shipped from Germany was $156 for the pair. I think they claim 5000K color but are definitely slightly yellow-ish and I would've pegged them at ~4500K. They definitely are brighter than OEM and shine well down my alley. I don't know that they're 150% of OEM brightness but I'd definitely guess it achieves the same brightness for 10-20% more distance.

Took a few action shots for ya'. Good thing I have two phones. Ram mount has a bunch of different arm lengths and adjustment points, so you can pretty much tweak it to whatever spot you want if you drop enough $ on the attachments.

On the 2008-2015 the 9" slot for mounting isn't quite flush with the speaker grill, but I put a small rubber washer between the track and the grill to make the fit tight (even if it wasn't perfectly flush). The 2016+ setup is better as it's flat, but that's like a $50,000 upgrade for me.

I wonder if this can be done on a 2013 LX570. We have a speaker grill too but its set further back. Hmm... :hmm:
I'm sure you could do it. The grill should pry off and you can check underneath to see if there would be any interference with the lock nuts. You might just need some 6" extensions to make the arms long enough to position your devices where you want them, like this:

FWIW I bought one of each of these for my setup:

OK, here's a semi-stupid question: has anyone seen a source for a "flip up" front license plate holder?

I need to put one on an ARB bull bar so I can hide, but still get at the winch - can't seem to find one anywhere. The holes are 7" OC (same as a US license plate) and ideally, it would be spring loaded so it stays put but could also be flipped out of the way at a 90 degree angle. I am currently using magnets which are fine, but at some point that's not gonna cut it when bouncing around on rocks in the rain.

I have seen the fair lead type but that won't work here, and the roll pan type all seem to use a different hole spacing.

Germany!
I ended up getting Philips D4s Standard and was wondering where to get the Xtreme versions

Looks like it would work for the LX570 too. Would be clean looking with a wireless charging setup with the wire running behind the grill/dash.

Tuffy makes one.

Right, except it bolts to the fair lead which I specifically said I can't use (unless they make another version that I am not aware of....).
Sorry, since we are on a tech forum, I assumed that you could use a drill to make two holes to "customize" it. Good luck in your search.

How would one drill extra holes on the 2 relatively narrow tabs that mount to the vehicle to customize the spacing?

@greynolds

Unless your drill is 1" in diameter, you can make two holes easily in that 1" wide strip.

This is my picture in my garage, not something I got on the internet.

Heck, for this use, one could saw off the "ears" that would go under the fairlead if they bothered the user.

Go buy a piece of 1" aluminum bar stock from Home Depot, cut the width of your license plate, then drill it and mount it to that spot on the bumper, then drill new holes and mount the flip-up holder to that?

I haven't use the Tuffy flip-up license plate holder but I'm wondering if the license plate would bounce around at low speed. I don't see any resistance except for the lock nuts.

Personally I'd just go buy a 1' long piece of L/angle bar stock, a 1' piece of flat bar stock, and a pair of stainless steel self-closing hinges and just make my own bracket for half the cost.

No bouncing necessary. Let friction do the work. Just tighten the bolt/nut to the point where it is snug but not tight, so the plate can be moved up and stay out of place while winching, and stay down when it isn't. Not so loose that it flops, not so tight that it can't be moved. Easy peasy.

I didn't use the Tuffy unit that I bought, I just drilled new holes in my plate and mounted it flat to the TJM bumper.

But it could easily be modified with a drill and 5 minutes of effort to work without putting it behind a fairlead, at almost any hole spacing (within the overall width of the unit).
