so by now we have a dead winch, no spare for Mosses truck, broken front birf, a 70 with open diffs and street tires and we arrive at the exit point to find a "Private property, you must ask supervisor in shack for permission to travel through"
no problem, we head to the shack and Moose goes over to ask the guy to open the gate.
the guy is swearing, kicks the door open (thankfully Moose was standing back as to not eat the corner of the door) and lays into Moose verbally.
Moose explains the situation and the ass tells him to go BACK to the trail and finish it since it is only 3/4 mile to the end AND even if he did open the gate there is another gate down the road and THAT owner will come out with a gun.
so, Moose makes the call and we head back to the trail. the last time i went up that trail it was nasty. this time Moose lead and got stuck BADLY so i drive down the trail, passed by Moose and went around the bend. in front of me is a hole... screw that... in front of me is a bloody lake so i try and drive along the edge only to slip sideways into the hole.
then the misserable old fawk in me comes to light.
i can not get 3 more trucks through this hole even if i do make it.
so
i go back to Moose, get the facts straight and then tell him to call the cops. I mentioned that this situation is now life threatening and even though we tried to be patient and polite following the rules of the sign, the supervisor would not open the gate AND there was threats of guns being made. we need the cops to mediate the situation.
personally, i was heading back and that gate was being opened one way or another and a fine of $150 for trespassing was an acceptable cost.
by the time we got Moose freed from the pit and back to the road, Moose radioed and said "cops are at the gate and they are getting the key" ... bitch'n.
so we make sure all cans are disposed of, all seat belts are fastened and insurance and registration is in order and approach the gate.
it seems when the cop went to get the key the super started yelling at him, a warning by the cop with a suggestion of a trip to the cell to cool off might be in order. 20 mins later, with a huge thanks to the 5 cops in 3 vehicles and we were on our way.
as we drove back the weather warned of a nasty snow storm coming so Mitch and I were loading up and heading home. 18 hours on the trail and now a 4 hour ride home in a snow storm was ahead of us.
loaded and chained we headed for the nearest tims to get a coffee and a sandwich, then the storm hit with a vegence, i had a hard time seeing the center line and the should line and with a transport tailing us we headed down the 400 at about 70 k/h. an hour up the road i couldn't keep my eyes open any longer so we pulled off for a quick hour nap.
the storm was over for a bit Mitch took over to Meaford where the second blast took away the visibility and turned the road to sheer ice. once again i took the wheel and we proceeded at about 20 k/h with the rear tire breaking loose now and then to remind me to keep it slow and steady.
once we hit Walters Falls it was decided to unload the ragtop and drive it seperately since the truck was fishtailing more and more the closer to home we got and we had some very steep icy road ahead of us. one particular hill i went over at 10 k/h and by the bottom i was doing 90 and up the other side it was difficult to keep the truck and trailer straight but with a blurping of the throttle i made it over.
it was white knuckling from then on till we were home.
i enjoyed the runs, i actually enjoyed the challenge of getting home. we were up for 27 hours and were beat, i could only sleep for about an hour and a half before i was wide awake again.
Monday was a zombie day.
thanks Dave and Brad for getting the group together.
