It is stronger than the older non-split cases.

You need it to go H55 5 speed.

Addresses a weak link in the cruiser drive train.

All the above.

It is also quieter than the one piece case.

I converted over to a split case from a one piece. Feel much better with it in there.

It is bigger though.:frown:

What's so cool about a split transfer case?

for me, above all, it is a sea change in the amount of work it takes to do anything with the tcase. the whole thing can come down in pieces without pullers for the most parts, and no single major component weighs more than 50 pounds. they ARE quieter. they ARE tougher. you do need one of the post 82 splitcases for an H55f. you can find Tcase brakes for them, but they are pricey. gear sets are available for them. and after the second time in it, the one in my wifes 62 hasn't leaked a drop. I'm going with the short later 4 speed and 34mm split case(the 80-85 1/2 had 34mm idler shaft, later has 38mm) a later splitcase can be used on an earlier late short 4 speed, and they came manual shift on late 60 series, or vacuum shift on 62s. the vacuum shift case has bearing supported output gears rather than the standard bushings that everyone till late 87 got to use. I've got a manual shift 34mm splitcase, and a rare vacuum shift 34mm splitcase. gunna use the manny on the 55 and swap the vacuum shift 34 case into the 62, just to keep the drive trains close to the same...there are different bearings used on the 38mm case, so having both of mine match also means I only need one bearing set on the shelf...... you must have a 19 spline output transmission- long or short, but it needs 19 splines

Did you need to modify your floor to run the split case?

Thinkin

You guys got me thinking H55 in my future.....dang you all!

Best upgrade you can do! I went that way about a year ago - (did same with my 60 about 3 years ago) it makes a world of difference. lower RPMs, less noise, better gas milage, higher cruise speed, still have low end torque and control. It's hard to believe Toyota didn't offer it as an option in the US.

H55 are hard to find so start looking for one now and if you get a shot at one get it and store it until your ready - they never seem to be available when you are. :frown:

Fairly easy to do biggest issues cut trans cover to move the gearshift back about 4"s a support cross member needs to be fab'd and the parking brake.

Bottom line DO IT!!!!

Can you show us what you had to do to the floor and tranny cover?

Hey I have a 1975 55 too! OldBeachBob are you running the 2f in it as well? Did it just bolt up?

Used a Fj60 split case and the H55. Had to shorten the rear drive shaft and lengthen the front drive shaft. Cut floor back about 4"s

Had to fab up a rear transfer case cross member. Added a PBrake from (disc) on back of transfer case - but it's not working well enough. I'm gonna have to do more on it.

The FJ 60 pumpkins really helped top speed too.
