The plan is a VW TDI swap in front of an H55/split case in my ‘79 40. All of this being unobtanium, if I were to get an auto split case to convert is any better than another? Early better than late? FJ62 or FJ60 better?

New H55F and a new split case are not unobtanium.

Indeed, I should have qualified my statement by limiting that status to used, and therefore potentially less pricey, examples. Let’s pretend for the moment that I made bad life choices, squandered my higher education opportunities by majoring in saving the world instead of something marketable, and now I work with my hands for peanuts, AND I was thinking of converting a used auto split case to save money: is one as good as another given my plans?

Of that I have no doubt. I’m sure the “distribution curve” is normal. As stacked as the odds are against me, I’m trying to NOT have this project cost 20 grand and 20 years…I doubt I can muster either. This has been a lifelong dream…and there’s a strongly correlated reason it’s happening during the “final chapters”.

Both of us being rather tender hearted it delayed our progress significantly.

Believe the the transfer input gear mated to a A440F has a shorter spline section than the manual transmissions. Reason being the transmission output shaft has a shorter spline section. It should fit manual transmission the contact area is shorter and possibly wear quicker.

I have the 38mm shaft in mine. The A440F transmissions have been replaced with the H55F transmission and there are plenty of sources for the right parts.
Revisk has done this mod on his 60 series you may want to reach out to him.

Was the transfer case input gear as I described? Just remember visiting a friend at his and showing what he had found. I did search the US market idler gear for latte FJ60 and the FJ62. Same part number. Which means the correct 4/86+ FJ60 manual input gear will work with our FJ62 transfer case.

The only involvement I had was selling him a 3F bell housing. You will have to ask him but I do know he is very happy with it.

I had thought about switching to a H55F in my FJ62. I have collected most the parts. The front driveshaft is only large piece missing. We will see if it ever happens. I also have a low mileage A440F and transfer I bought thirty years ago. Covered either way if the auto fails. I have excepted the 62 with an auto is a slug. If someone made a counter shaft for the H55F that worked with H42 first thru fourth gearing it would be a no brainer. 3:1 or 4:1 low range gears available for the transfer case would make up for the loss of the lower first gear in the transmission and would be a friendlier street driver.

It seems obvious (to me with my cursory experience) that the H55f is just an H42 with an extra bit bolted on. I tried to see if I could find said bit but to no avail. As it is our cruiser adventure is taking yet another sharp turn. I’m getting a free B motor from @brianblack138 so we can enjoy the thing as it is before we’re dead. So now I guess I gotta start a thread about searching for the right clutch?

Now the B series motor uses a different input shaft for the gear box (H55B versus H55F). Your 6 cylinder gear box will not fit with the B motor.

You can modify it: you'll need the transmission input shaft/bell housing for the H42 to suit a B series. I'm not sure whether the B was ever offered with the H42 or just the H41, but I'm sure some Cannuks can chime in here with the answer.
