Spare Tire Location

For those of you that dont already know I just purchased a set of 40x13.5R17 Xterrains. I bought a 5th tire and I am searching for a good mounting location. I have a 4x4 Labs rear bumper and can add a swingout on it but my concern with that is I wont be able to see out my back window and would have to modify it to fit a 40. The next option is mounting it in the back but then I will loose all cargo room not to mention the killer stereo equipment. The final option is the roof but lets be real, with 5in of lift and 40's I'm already top heavy enough. Or I can just leave it in the garage and throw it in the back of someones tow rig before each ride. Talk about a delima. I just had to go with 40's. Did I miss any alternatives?

Thought about building a cargo drawer system and mounting the tire to the top of it? It will provide some cargo area while helping lower your COG.

That idea crossed my mind but then tire would sit almost as high as if it was mounted on the bumper. Also would have to remove the amp and sub. One other issue that might arise is the fact that this tires' true diameter is 39" and sitting ontop of a storage system will raise it up off the floor and will be a tight squeeze between the 2nd row seats and tailgate.

The price you pay for going bigger

Even modifying a rear carrier to not block your view you run into it hanging too low and snagging on the trail.

Put it on the rear and then install a back up camera that is on all the time. Thats what they have on the B777. Then add that beeping alert when your in reverse.

Most gys running 40's don't carry around a 40" spare. Have it available at camp. for rides like ours. If you were going on an expedition type trip then you'll have to add the swing out in my opinion.

Your tire laying flat on a shelf or drawer system will sit one inch higher than mine. in fact when i ran the IROKS it sat where yours would sit... That 40 standing up on a bumper will be tall... the 40 laying down in the back will not even be above your headrests.

the drawer box idea with the spare on top will probably be your best option for visibility. instead of having storage maybe store your sound equipment in the drawers. I mounted my spare on the driver side and a little lower for better visibility. we can always fab up the swing away so that it hugs the driver side giving you some visibilty on the passenger side which is really where you need to see anyway. Or learn to drive using your mirrors like a trucker! you'll be about as high!

Mount the amp to the drawers and leave some space for the sub unless you have a big ass box. Alternatively like lenross said, swing out tight to the body on the DS.

Be creative.....mount it on the hood like a Land Rover Nevermind, if you did (a) you couldn't see over/around it, and (b) your truck would sooner or later develop electrical problems.......

I tried to toss a 39" Krawler in the back of mine the other day and it did not fit between the tailgate and the back seat.

May want to put a tape measure on it.

I NEVER take a spare tire on the trail unless it is an expedition type point-to-point run.

Leave it at camp or at home. Get someone to haul it to events.

I use CO2 and plugs.

I have a big ass sub box. Think it is time to sell the big ass box and fund other truck parts.

I'd make the forward 1/4 of the drawer system be the sub box and use weather stripping around the drawers to prevent rattling.

It would cut into your cargo but it's better than getting rid of the whole setup.

I think I would add a swing arm and have it sit in the middle and a little low. That way you may have some visibility and you shouldn't hang too low. I would say 19.5" up from the bumper and you would be good to go.
