I think the Orion is the way to go.
I did get the beast to run last night:). Got to do some carb work. See if I can get it dialed in a little better. Has to be choked for a while to stay running. I know fuel injection would be the way to go, But I have to stop at some-point...

Interesting, Nolen...

Guy with a SM420 and an SM465 adapted to a D300. SM465 would be nice. Jeep and Toyota parts... - Arkansas Crawlers 4X4 Forum

Adapting it would be fairly cheap (aside from all the nickel and dime stuff...) - GM SM465 4 speed manual transmission to Landcruiser FJ40 Adapter Kit. | Advance Adapters Plus, D300 is a great transfer case that can be upgraded as you go along. Can run D44 flanges to reuse Toyota driveshafts. Upgrades include twin stick (front digs, too), 4 to 1 kit, 32 spline outputs. Hmmm... Or, toss the D300 and get an Atlas if your wallet is super heavy.

Seriously, it might be worth considering the SM465. Paging Daryl. I'm sure he has a great opinion on this...

We got the yellow one running pretty good when it was doing this by getting a can of seafoam spray and fogging the carb 2/3 times and then running seafoam in the gas.

It will still need a rebuild at some point but it sat up for 3 years and this bought Todd some time. It runs great at 1/3 choke.

Mine runs good at 1/3 choke too. It has not been ran since march. I am sure the bowl is gummed up. I need to try a little sea foam.
If I take the carb back off I might end up painting it too;)

Actually, Nolen did a great job of presenting all the "reasonable" options out there for most 40 owners. I think a little hard on the sm420 as I am a BIG fan of them in terms of bang for the buck. I would go that route again in a minute but it's true they dont shift nearly as smooth as the Toyota box.

If you have the cash - go with the Orion. That's my best advice

Those were honest critiques. Don't plan on using the first gear on the road or slamming second gear and keeping the RPMs up.

If I was to build a beater 40 for the mostly the trail I would FOR SURE get an SM420.

If I was building a 40 for road and trail, I would do an Orion.

Yes, they were. Didn't I just say that?

I equate an sm420 to a Cruiser three speed on the road. I rate the Cruiser 4 speed quite a bit higher for road use. First gear in both the sm420 and sm465 are "granny" gears and not normally used on the road. Just start in second gear and think of it as a three speed transmission. At least 2-4 gear is synchronized in the sm transmissions unlike the useless first gear in early Cruiser three speeds...

Damn for all this stripping i may weld ya up a pole!
Dolla dolla billz. Gotta pay for it somehow...

What color are you going with again?

It most likely is going to be a OEM color. I am not sure which one though. Although I had thought of doing it Sage like the 80. It has some rough spots that had bondo in them. Looks like it s****ed a tree or something. Most of it is under the door seal, and by the marker light. Not sure whats on the driver side yet have not gone to metal yet. I would like to do some fenders like Jrobs since they have been cut on.
Also taken out the bedliner is not a very fun job! :bang:

looking great.....again...you have done more in 2 months than I have in 15 months....im pathetic

I think he meant the dry ice to remove the bed liner trick.

Put the dry ice on a section of liner for a couple minutes
Move it to a second location
Hit the first location with a dead blow or rubber hammer and watch the liner chips fly
Repeat

What A weekend!!! Well I got it about 95% stripped down. also played with a dent puller and pulled a few spots out. Welded a few holes up. Never tried the dry ice trick, The stripper worked well. I also used a pressure washer and it was blowing S**t everywhere. Had to wash my truck to get the paint chips off it.

Did a compression test on the 40 and the 80.
