I've recently replace both regs in my '77 40, along with all the other felts, guides and related door stuff. The problem is on the passenger side only- after carefully installing it, I noticed a "glitch" when rolling DOWN the glass. A hesitation, like it was hitting/interfering with something. After watching it in action, I see the REAR-MOST nylon wheel that rolls along in the channel of the regulator gets to the very end of the channel during the roll-down, hangs halfway out the end, almost allowing it to fall, then as the window continues downward, it reverses slightly going back into the channel a little. The travel limit tabs that are supposed to keep the wheel in the channel, were flattened a little, so I bent them back perpendicular to the channel as I thought they should be, and upon repeating the up & down cycle, they were bent back flat again. I've tried to shift things front to rear, and take up slack, putting a bias on the window mechanism, etc, etc., to no avail. I'm out of ideas- Anyone have an idea??? Thanks!

UPDATE- just called SOR, and they claim their regs are perfectly made with no variation and it's my problem to figure out. They said my glass has moved in it's bottom cradle/channel causing everything to shift sideways enuf to cause this. I looked and don't see any bias towards one side. So, when I said I'll post this response to this forum, he got real "snippy" and hung up.:censor::flipoff2:

Do you have the glass from the wrong door? If I recall the channels on the glass are aligned differently for each side. I believe you can pull the channel off and move it.

On my 2-'75 40 the channels are not interchangeable...the glass itself can be moved from d/s to the p/s, but you must remove the glass and use the proper side channel.

OK, other options. glass channel moved. Arm on new regulator is longer than old one. Regulators are on the wrong side. Do they make side specific regulators?

#1 Side specific-yes. But you can't accidentally swap 'em. #2 if the arm was longer, then SOR lied about it being a "puurrrfect replacement" LOL. (I checked it being about the same length) So that leaves me with two possibilities- the channel/cradle somehow slid sideways on the glass, or the two threaded holes in said channel to attach the glass are INCORRECTLY located. Hmmm...

Thanks guys for yer input. I'm gonna take another look at this glass bottom channel alignment thing.
first off your dealing with a 40 year old truck that you just put all new felts in, so there's bound to be some adjustments needed, just slide the the channel back on the window. Oh and maybe instead of blaming and threatening the vendor, you might be want to be a little more appreciative that there's a vendor that still has parts for your 40 year old truck.

Tysano- I wasn't "threatening and/or blaming" the vendor, dude. I was just trying to get some help from them as I had spent bucket of dough with them, and was merely reporting on their response. So get off yer High Horse.

My felts are actually from SOR too. I have had them for about 8 years now and they are still tight. Sometimes I have to use one hand on the glass to help them up. I never even thought of widening the channels. I am glad of that tip and will give it a try.

not on a high horse, was there a actual problem with SOR'S regulator? I just get tired of vendors being blamed, for the installers lack of effort, when it comes to replacement parts on a 40 year old vehicle, I'm just saying, be thankful that you aren't having to fabricatethe parts yourself, if you were actually capable of doing so.

Tysano- there you go again. Do you actually READ back what you write? Your last sentence could be taken as a thinly-veiled semi-insult. But, who cares, right? FWIW, I might be one of the most exacting, anal-retentive, perfectionist M/F'r to a fault you'll ever make a comment to. But enuf about me. As I already mentioned to a HELPFUL poster, I need to take another look at it. Maybe the window channel had moved sideways.

I apologize, I wasn't trying to insult you. I probably shouldn't be on here when I've been drinking. I truly hope you can accept my apology.

@Brownd3max - Last month, I just installed new SOR window regulators in my 77's doors. I don't recall the passenger side as being an issue. As mentioned, take a photo of where the lower window channel is secured onto the window. If I recall correctly, the channels (side specific) on mine were/are located about 1/4" (+/-) from the 45 degree end.

FWIW - The reason I ordered a set of SOR regulators, while refurbishing my doors, I noticed the drivers side window regulator had a broken spring-tab. Thus the new pair. I've since had the broken unit welded and repaired, so now I have my OEM regulators as backups.

I just got my '79 FJ40 back from the body shop. I was replacing door window glass as they had some kind of tinting on them that was scratched, didn't look clean. I traveled up to Quito where the work was being done to help where I could. The new pieces of glass arrived the same day as myself. What I did was measure from the "square" end of the glass to the channel and found that to be 2150 mm. I remember the fellow showing me that this dimension would not work on the right hand door as he was assembling it. I don't know what he set it at, he had sealer all over, a real mess. They had lost my new channels and so I drove The Beast home with rattling windows. They had put a piece of cardboard on top of the glass to minimize the rattle. I took that out today to allow me to close the window for rain purposes and noted that the window does not go up in the rear. This would clearly be related to the positioning of the glass in the channel bolted to the regulator. Any suggestions on what to look for?
