A great childhood friend is coming visiting next weekend (June 11/12) with his significant other. He's stoked on going out wheeling with us. We are lending the little one to my Dad so Kerri can come out with us! I will have a very full cruiser.

Who's available next weekend for a good 'ol Sooke run? I'd like to go in the Secret Gnome Garden / Narnia way that Cam and I discovered off of Anderson Main and make our way up past The Wall to Tugwell for a bonfire and lunch.

The plan is for Saturday.

I'm out. I have way too much to do on the truck for my Yukon trip. Plus fix all the stuff I have broken lately. :)

Ah common dude! You're my X-pert navigator! Pleeeeeeeeeeeease???? Shorter trip... not all day...

*Bump* Can anyone come? Steve, Vern, Ken.... ??? Please!?! It'll be fun I PROMISE! :D

Updated day to SATURDAY for sure now.

We'll go in the scratchy way, up Muir Mountain, through the NorthWest passage to Tugwell lake, then out through Jordan River. :steer:

Cam is out, Ray can't make it... won't someone come with us? If not I'm gonna have to go in alone... I've been promising this trip to Ty and his gf for a year!

If you're going alone better take your tools... and a tent... and maybe a spot? so you can at least message for help. Still don't recommend it though... not that I haven't done it at some point...

If you break down you're guaranteed an award too :D

Yeah, I've been thinking about getting a SPOT Messenger for some time now. This T's it off... I am going to get one tomorrow. They're on sale at London drugs, too!

I will definitely be adding you into my "need help" predefined contacts Steve :)

Ah cool.... I've been wanting to get one too... Let me know when you have it and I'll come check out the messenger...

I'm getting one as well! They sound useful. Once Andrew figures it all out I'll get him to teach me how to use it. :)

Go to best buy... they have them and will beet london drugs advertized price by 10%

Thanks, you just saved me $14.90
I called and confirmed BB will beat them by 10% when it's on their website advertized.

Cam, it'll be very useful to have at least one of these for our treks out as a group. For those of us who aren't web wheelers, anyway! :flipoff2:

Speaking of which, CAN ANYONE COME OUT??? Pleeeease? It's funner in a group!

We took a Spot Messenger the two times we drove down to Baja. We turned on the "realtime tracking" feature and gave our parents and friends the link. It updates your position on a Google map every 15 minutes.........

Apparently when we drove a few hundred meters into the bush off the main highway just outside Mexicali at 10:00 pm, and shut the Spot off for the night our parents didn't get much sleep!!! They figured we had been kidnapped LOL.

But I read somewhere the new Spots actually let you send short emails????? That would be cool!

how did you find it for batteries? can you wire it into your truck ... I hate buying batteries for things that could just be plugged in...

Apparently it will only work on non-rechargable lithium AA batteries. They have a much flatter voltage curve and longer shelf life. They explicitly say in the instructions not to use alkaline or rechargable batteries. And you cannot hardwire it. The unit is sealed so it is waterproof and floats.

The battery life seems to just be based on the number of messages sent, ie. "okay" or "help" messages. Ours was sending "okay" messages every 15 minutes 24 hours a day for 18 days straight and the batteries were still going strong.

I think if you just kept the unit kicking around and sent the odd "okay" message manually (say, once per day if you're on an expedition) the batteries would last.... years?

The tracking feature proved to do the exact opposite of what we intended. Instead of keeping our parents happy it just stressed them out thinking "what are they doing there, why are they stopping so long there?" And then they'd Google the places we were and find out that some tourist got kidnapped there last month. I think a simple "okay" once per day MAX would be sufficient next time.

However, my employer found it very entertaining watching us drive from San Diego to Vancouver in under 30 hours. He kept sending me texts saying "I've calculated that you must be breaking the speed limit" and "truckers aren't allowed to drive for more than 12 hours without sleeping" etc, etc.

Heh, Nathaniel that's funny stuff.

Here's the story. SPOT has a $50 mail in rebate SPOT $50 REBATE but one of the rebate requirements is that you purchase it for $169 and send them a copy of your receipt. Meaning the sale item at London Drugs for $149 would not be eligible. :bang:

So, I went to Best Buy, bought it for $169, photocopied my receipt, and mailed in the rebate. According to Best Buy policy, you can also bring in your receipt with proof its cheaper somewhere else (within 15 days) and they will refund you the difference plus the 10%. :hhmm:

Went back to Best Buy with my original receipt and showed them the London Drugs ad, they refunded me the $20 plus another $15 off because of the 10% deal.

$169 - $20 - $15 - $50 (rebate) = $84 (not including tax of course)

:flipoff2:

wow i don't know what your hourly rate is but that seems like a lot of work for a discount especially if ya had to drive anywhere!

1 extra trip to best buy, which is about a 5 min drive or a 20 min walk from my house. Definitely worth the $35.00!
