I would think the worse streets of NY is off roading!

Just a tiny bit of clarity the key fob, you can lock it with a key fob in the vehicle but only by using another key fob. (When I travel into the backcountry without my wife I'll sometimes take her key as a backup and leave it in the truck then lock it with my key.) It doesn't help your situation because you will still have a key fob to hide/protect/etc. But if you are with someone else who also has a key, you don't both need to bring one. At least that is the way it is on my MY16.

Yes, this is true for my Landcruiser and Lexus GS. My wife usually has a key in her purse and she'll hide it when we go to a rest area. I lock the car with my key and everything is fine.

What if you remove the battery in the FOB, leave/hide it in vehicle and just take the metal key?

If @gomotomoto has a truck, why are there no pics? No pics = no truck.
