Soccermom's $950 service at the dealer -- (now itemized)

-- she had a '95 80 and got the rear pads and rotors done, plus a 75,000 mile "check" --

-- $950 --

-- when she left, I told them that's a lot of $$$ for not a whole lot --

-- they just told me that's how it is --

-- glad this group and its folk are here to help, or i'd be driving an insight --

;)

i was told at my local dealer that the shop rate of $65 ups to $85 for landcruiser work.

Wow, makes you wish you could set up a shop and only do those type of services. Train a 18 year old kid tp change brakes/rotors, pay him $10/hour and go wheel all day.

That shouldn't have cost more than $300 for that. Thing is...some people don't even question what's being done!

Did that include the price of a pair of new rotors too? Just wondering, as I just went to pick up some FRONT pads from the Toy Dealer an hour ago for $ 41.58/pair.

Regards,

Regards,

You made out better than the lady, but you might try going with the C'Dan-Man next time around.

Nice sig, Rook. :D

When it comes to brakes, I have seen people pay just about anything. A buddy had a bad coil on his Expedition. It seems water drips on the rear most right side COP coils. He bought a warranty so they replaced it free. (It's a known problem, they oughtta replace 'em all for free) Rather than bolt on the new one himself, a 15 minute job, he took it to the dealer. All four wheels suddenly needed brakes with rotors. Trans and engine flushes and a fuel injector clean. They just poked him for every bull s*** marked up fictitional repair they could think up. $1200 for his free coil and he was happy about it.

If your ABS light comes on, you might as well just refinance your house. I often think about just unplugging a wheel sensor to see how bad I'd get poked.

Sounds like a "60 minutes" story in the making....

About 15 years ago in Worcester MA a local paper did something along these lines. They towed a car around to different shops with a single debilitating failure that would cost only something like $2.50 in parts and 5 minutes time. The cost ranged all over the place and and a few needed the vehicle for a few day to complete the job. Only 1 shop fixed it on the spot and told them he'd catch them the next time on the $2.50 and wished them a good day. The day after the story hit the papers a traffic cop was needed to keep it orderly at his shop as the line went down the street several blocks and was causing problems. I can't remember the total number of shops tested but it did seem like there was only 1 honest one out there.

Rook, actually the saying is "The beatings will continue until morale improves" :slap: :princess:

Re the charge, of course what Eric doesn't tell us is how sure he is about the actual work that was done. While most dealers will grab some extra time if they can, I doubt any would charge that just for pads and a "check".

Rick,

I heard about that story as well, but when it comes to dealer prices, you may remember if it wasn't for the extended warranty, I would have coughed up in excess of a $3,000 in total repairs that the dealer had caused to the vehicle at the time due to the lack of knowledge and ability to diagnose a problem and fix it right not to mention that they failed to honor and acknowledge their mistakes as well until I complained to Lexus HQ and they finally flew over a field master technician and after 9 hours of labor later as I was watching and asking questions he found out that the front inner axels as well as the outers were installed wrong and needed a new set of them due to the wear and tear that it caused for a period of 3 weeks of driving.

On the hand some other dealers know how to service their customers and still be reasonable to have them come back.

But if you ask me, I learned my lesson and luckily all it cost me is $200.00 for a new and complete front end.

My $0.02

I just called the dealer to get the low-down on her service --

- new rear pads and rotors -

- 75,000 mile service (she had 110K on it) --

which includes:

- ATF

- rotate and balance (?) tires

- new air filter

- clean and adjust brakes (?)

- reset timing (?)

No bargains here --

I wouldn't get service anywhere where my service records were shared with others without my consent. Not to mention the pricing.

TJK

Her name was never mentioned -- I mentioned to them I was curious what service she had, since I have the same vehicle, with 80K more miles on it --

While in my current negotiations for several Mercedes diesels I have been calling the dealers that the people tell me they serviced them at. Every single one spills the beans on every service done to each vehicle. They will not disclose the costs, but they will tell me the information based on my story of knowing the owner and negotiating for a purchase.
