So...what is yet another great thing about an 80 series?

Nope, not looking for a snorkel. I don't know if that video convinced me I want one or convinced me I don't want one:confused:

I just thought it was a crazy video.

I stumbled across it looking at a video someone posted for the spare tire lift mod for 80's. I am lifting my spare so hopefully I won't drag my backside so much.

I guess this guy did try it in an open Jeep

Lol, I was on the run in the pic above. Theres a stream crossing with a shallow side and a deep side, dude went in the deep side. His junk started floating down the river along with everything that was inside.

To give that yj credit it did start right up after the plugs were removed and some water was cranked out.

D

That's awesome and surprising it started right up. That must be a good friend wading out to hook on the winch cable while the driver sits high and dry.

I'm surprised you even found that picture here. I saw that picture on a thread that was describing in inverted hitch mount. Looked like a great trip.

My dad's '86 mini truck got caught in a flash flood while one a float trip. Front half of the truck submerged. We did the same thing, pulled the plugs, water shot out, then started right up. Pretty cool to see.

Back to the coolness of the 80 series, I picked up an issue of "4X4 Garage - Toyota Edition" yesterday and there are some COOL 80's in there, including a budget build 80 that was sub $4000 when all was said and done. Now I'm wanting an 80! :bang:

Dude walkin out is the owner/driver, the other guy is a passenger that managed to stay relatively dry till we winched the heap out of the river. Look on their faces when the yj started to float down stream was priceless lol.

That may be one of the pics from my old 80 build? And I also have no idea how I stumbled onto this thread...

Just to add something to this thread, 80s are pretty easy to build cheap man, you just have to make some stuff yourself instead of buying everything.

That makes more sense, driver wading out there. I can only imagine the look on their faces, a combination of :o:mad::confused::doh:

Funny, I just noticed the Jolly Roger flag, how ironic.

Complete baselining, new fluids, axle service etc. Sliders, bumper, suspension, winch... Several mods that are beneficial e.g., 7 pin ,temp gauge etc. And some way to get that big arse grin off your face

Man, I've got 80 fever.... spent too much time last night searching the western half of the US on Craigslist for a good candidate.

Think I'm going to have to do a bit more research to find preferable years, engine performance, FJ vs. LX, ....

Thinking about giving the 100 to Jess and getting an 80 for myself. Besides the lack of power, what else would I need to prepare for if I do end up making the switch?

Get ready to deal with rusty/stuck bolts...lots of PB Blaster does the trick. Also, you will want to get a trailer hitch right away.

If you go with the FJ80, be prepared to arrive everywhere a bit late, and to spend about 40 hours replacing $70 of leaky gaskets. I'm proud to say that mine has stopped bleeding on my garage floor :).

Hmmm.............. maybe I'll just get a JK.

I probably made this sound worse than it is. I love my 80 despite the work it has needed. If you get the FZJ (instead of the innefficient but nearly indestructible 3FE powered FJ), you will probably make it to your destination on time.

You really DO need the trailer hitch though, because you may not be able to get stuck without it ;)

There have been a bunch of cool fj40's on CL lately too, may want to check those out.

If I ever was to get an FJ80, it was going to get a 5.3 vortec crammed down it's throat right away. Much lighter, better economy, and 325 HP right out of the box. It's just really dang hard to find one with a blown engine.

I really didn't have the problem with rusty bolts, mid-west and east coast rigs are bad for this. Gaskets age and get hard, just the age of the vehicle. Gets a bit old doing these thing but there is a reward.

That right there tells you something.

Bad fuel economy and slow are the biggest drawbacks in my opinion, but then again, everything is a compromise at some point in time.

There's one on CL right now with a bad engine. LX 450, little info in the ad.
