Right off the bat, you'd loose your compound low ('granny') 1st gear that the FJ-25 tranny has (which somewhat compensates for the absence of a low range in the 25's single speed transfer case).

I don't know . . . would an FJ-40 4-spd tranny bolt right up to a stock FJ-25 without adapters or mods of some sort? Jim? John? Mike?
 
Well since Mike and Jim I'm sure are on the road for they run this weekend I let you know what I think sell the 25 and buy a 40. Just kidding advantage of a later four speed is it is full syncro in all four speeds not just 3rd and 4th like the 25 four speed. there are two four speeds for the 40s (not counting the 81 model with the split case transfer or the five speed with granny and split case but the five speed is really to long to install in a 25 or 40 and still have any lenght in the rear drive line) the USA is about 3.5 to 1 and the non-USA is about 5.0 to 1 the 25 is 5.41 to 1 but only a single speed transfer. Two transfers will work on the the 40 four speed. 1.99 to 1 standard and the 3.314 to 1 three speed adapted to the four speed. What will need to be changed 1. bell housing (maybe fly wheel and clutch) 2. transfer case. 3. drive lines 4. rear axle (two speed transfer rear output is off to the side, not centered like the 25. 5. flange for the front axle or upgrade to a dish brake axle at the same time. Also linkage for the transfer shifter and replacing the frame brace behind the transfer. Very costly unless you have all the parts laying around like some people :grinpimp:

There are no "advantages" to the FJ25 tranny other than the pleasure and pain of driving the vehicle as it was 45+ years ago. Virtually any transmission would be an improvement in driveability. I would argue the strength point compared to later transmission and transfers. But that is usually not an issue with an otherwise mostly stock 25. Tranny choice will depend on how you intend to modify and use the 25.

:idea: Start another thread on a tranny swap and we'll discuss the options, because there are many just like John described. And let us know what motor you have. I'm thinking it was a Chevy, so I'm curious how that got mated up to the stock FJ25 tranny.
 
What did I do to ANY Cruiser this weekend? Nothing...when I got home I couldn't help but notice that the Cruiser Chick pulled the motor out of her '68 Firebird...reprioritized me she did, but at least she does the parts runs...
 
I had an uneventful wrench day on the 25. Last week while wheeling, I found out that the PO had taken out the fuel filter element and never replaced it with anything!! The truck began to run like crap as the bouncing around stirred up whatever was in the fuel tank. So, today was install new fuel filter assembly day. I tried to re-use the old assembly, but it was too corroded so I stuck the glass bowl onto a new assembly. I also clear coated the aluminum/steel parts to try and keep them looking new. I'll keep the old assembly for a keepsake :) I spent an hour drooling on my new to me hub caps too. Maybe I'll get a chance to drive her tomorrow.

Pulling the motor is the hard part you know.............. :flipoff2: At least she didn't pull apart a room in the house like mine did while I was gone :frown: .

Similar problems to Mike after the weekend, so I Sea Foamed mine this morning ............................ then drove it local today, returning the waves of :princess: Jeepers.

So, what's the precise OE mounting location for the VIN plate after I get it stamped? Have you put yours in yet? Pics?

I've never used that . . . how well does it work? I'm suspecting some sticky rings and lifters on my FJ40.

Is it best used as an oil or gas additive? Any benefit to doing my 25 even though there's no symptons of anything wrong (preventative)?
 
MArks Offroad acquired them for me in my large parts purchase last month. If you only need one, he may not hook you up. But I may be needing 6 more soon, so maybe we can see if he can get us 2 sets. I'm sure we can find a home for one extra. My data tag is installed. You should have 4 holes on the upper passenger side of the firewall for it. If they've been bondo'd up, then look for evidence of their location in your glove box. Two of the holes would be in there and two are to the drivers side of the glove box. I havent taken a pic yet, but the stamping came out nice.

Actually did some work on the 25 today. Pulled the bib, chiselled off the old motor mounts (don't ask), took some wiring pix for reference. Dang, who took the motor?
 
Mike, I wonder why they stuck the data tag so high up under the dash like that. Those tags came out so nice, it's a shame I have to go and hide it like that. (BTW, great job you did on getting those made!!)

As far as the hubcaps go, I'll actually be needing 2. (One for the spare and one to replace one of mine that's literally pitted and rusted to death.)

The fenders remove easily . . . but you wouldn't believe the amount of caked-in dirt in the frame :mad:. Unfortunately I found some rust through on the PS floor at the edge. Is the floor pan the same as fj40?

Eric, I can't tell from the pic, but did you put in the brake booster and upgraded MC without having to chop the vertical firewall support? That's from a later FJ40, I assume?

I got a Warden adapter from Rick D for the brake master/booster. Unfortunately I re-drilled the firewall for the clutch master. Brake master is V6 toy mini (to match the brakes) and booster is fj60. Clutch hydraulic parts are early 70s fj40 IIRC.
