So Nissan just teased the Armada

Yes it has a tahoe defender mashup that lacks visual appeal. I felt similarly about most of my toyotas outside the sequoia to be honest. The GX550 was the only one I felt they truly nailed the exterior on. Unfortunately, that cabin was tight on space for rear facing car seats with my 6’3 frame in the front. We also just prefer having a usable third row to spread out. That and deplorable hvac in both the GX550 and sequoia. The nissan has significantly stronger AC. The sequoia could barely cool the whole cabin on max AC and the GX OT+ had no rear vents outside the center console.

Meanwhile the 200 is an icebox.

Indeed. Over time I think people have grown to love that Icebox. I actually loved the front end and side profile was ok. Always felt they could have improved the tail lights a bit. Then my LX570 I liked the back end but not so much the front. It’s rare that you buy a modern Japanese truck for its beauty haha

I think the Armada is quite good looking. I find the GX550 and LX600 to be amongst the ugliest vehicles sold today, clearly I am not who the designers were targeting.

I definitely like that vehicle, but I did actually speak to the one of the chief engineers for the Y63 over instagram (lol) and he did tell me that the Armada version of the Y63 is not as robust and durable as the Y63 Patrol sold overseas. The reason being is that we don’t have the same rough roads or demanding terrain in the USA. Our vehicle is more tuned and constructed for high way miles. That being said, the engineer did say the Y63 Armada is still a very stout vehicle, especially in Pro4X guise.

While it is still on the differential, we are now considering the LC250 for the wife, while I keep my 200. I don’t like that they are still selling a now confirmed water down version of the patrol, granted I don’t know how much watered down it is, obviously we didn’t get into specific over instagram chat.

I’d be interested to know the specifics but I seriously doubt they are making large modifications specifically for the US market. It feels like a tank the same way the LC200 does. Thick sheet metal, doors close with a nice thud. Completely different than anything Toyota is putting out not in Lexus guise today.

That was also on my short list. Ultimately I preferred the Nissan after checking both out. It’s definitely worth looking at for this category.

I wondered why people would pay so much for a LX over the expedition until I watched the car care nut poking around the expedition.

As much a we complain about LX prices and imperfections, it really puts it into perspective.

His video on the armada was definitely high on the list of nudges to push me over the edge. I was extremely hesitant to consider a Nissan. I like most everyone here am very loyal to Toyota. I’d prefer if this was a Toyota.

I think specifically if you’re shopping a sequoia, you need to drive the armada before you move forward. Its unfortunate this thread is in the 300 section because I totally understand why a lot of LX buyers wouldn’t be interested.

I will say even if you’re about to spend 70-85k on a 250 maybe drive one for kicks. As a Toyota guy I often don’t bother driving other brands I just wait and see what Mr T has in the pipeline.

If I had to replace the 200 today I think I’d lean towards armada. It’s a great car and I don’t think you made the wrong choice at all. I too would be very interested in the knowing the differences between the Patrol and Armada. In Arabic language forums there were discussions about this very same topic because they are supposed to be getting the Pro4X but GCC folks were skeptical because it is Armada based and not Patrol based. Also important to mention that no one on this board is driving their babied vehicles through war zones and craters and gunfire so maybe it’s not a bad idea to have a more market specific version.

I have read they are all the same, the Y63. Would be curious to know the differences.

Upon further digging I’ve read speculation the gulf version was more reinforced in the frame but somehow tows much less and the Aussie version will be both reinforced and tow the same as the American version. I tend to wonder how much of it is lip service knowing what each market wants to hear but don’t doubt there’s adjustments made.

Another tid bit I liked is the armada scored perfect on the crash tests whereas the tundra and I assumed sequoia had a blemish in the small driver overlap.

Hmm interesting because really we wouldn't need more reinforcement like that. Its because they overload them.

I have never owned a Nissan product but have friends and family members that owned 1 and 2nd gen Pathfinders. I always thought the old Nissans were good vehicles. After reading through the comments etc. in this thread, it appears the new Armada/Pathfinder Prox4 are worth checking out.

Is there any data out there on the Nissan V6TT? Even after having Blackstone examine the oil in my 24 LX (which received a good report at 35K), I find myself wondering when I am going to be leaving engine parts all over the highway.

From what I gather the Toyota issue was less than 1% of vehicles. If yours is clean at 35k I suspect you are going to be fine. I’m not quite sure on data regarding the Nissan motor I was just speaking generally as they are well known for TT v 6 motors going back to the VG30 in the 300zx TT ~1990. I certainly don’t recall them having too many issues in the media with them but of course they had the CVT nightmare which doesn’t affect this truck. They are also obviously famous for the vr38 TT in the R35 GTR. This truck gets the VR35 TT.

Here’s the AI overview

Yes, the new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine in the 2025 Nissan Armada is directly derived from the R35 GT-R's engine family, sharing its VR-series architecture. While both are twin-turbo V6s, the Armada's engine has a smaller displacement and is tuned for the needs of a large SUV, whereas the GT-R's 3.8-liter VR38DETT engine is built for higher performance.

  • Shared heritage:
The Armada's new engine is part of the VR35 series, which is a derivative of the GT-R's engine architecture.

  • Key features:
Both engines share advanced technologies, such as the scavenger oil pump system first developed for the GT-R to ensure proper lubrication under high G-forces.

  • Performance differences:
The Armada's engine is a 3.5-liter displacement, while the GT-R's is a 3.8-liter, with the latter producing more horsepower. The Armada's engine is tuned for the torque required for a large SUV, while the GT-R's is optimized for a high-performance sports car.

I for one will be super happy when this arms race of who can make the most plasicky, overstyled, ugly car/truck phase is over and designs are trimmed, tightened, smoothed, and less complex.
Think of how more reliable and more user/maintenance friendly this truck could be if all that money, brain power, time and resouces that they spent on the horrendous design (billions) was diverted to engineering, efficiency, reliablily testing, and undercarriage/underhood maintenance concerns.
How can a group of higly compensated car people let that thing out the door?!

Sorry man, I think that ship has saled...IMO from now on it is all downhill to pack the most tech and ugliness into cars to make them look "futuristic" whatever that means.

To me, the LX (though the damn ginormous grill) is the last bastion of old-schoolness still integrating some of the new technologies, that are indeed helpful, without transforming the dashboard in a generic sea of screens one bigger than the other. The concept of a gauge cluster for example has vanished from most European/US brands. Toyota, in Toyota typical fashion, is the last one resisting to this tendency - though I just saw the new RAV4 and the cluster is also gone. All others are just designing generic multiple screens on top of each other, to a point you can't tell the difference between an Audi/BMW and a Kia/Hyundai.

The era of over-engineered (mechanically speaking) cars is dead. It is said for us car enthusiasts, but for the rest of the "normal" people, it will be just an appliance to take you from point a to point b. You will probably not even own it.

I read the other day that Mercedes is returning to gauges on the dash. I'm not sure which models are involved, probably the higher end ones. I personally hate the large screens that are replacing traditional gauges etc.

yep...as with most things due to human weirdness.....the pendulum swings wildly left and right

mess it up, break it, fix it, destroy it, complain about it, change it......over and over

we'll see sensible people back in car design at some point.

(have you see modern car designers? they look like they live in a 500 sq ft apartments and have no grasp on the real world)
