Hey guys. I searched through the threads that covered this but didn't find a conclusive answers. My 97 will ALWAYS slip out of reverse when backing up a steep hill.
Why is this happening? Get technical for me.
Was there ever a recall done by Toyota because I know others have this issue?
What needs to be done to fix it? (full tranny rebuild or swap?)
Are there any tricks I can use to back up hills until I can afford the repairs?
Thank you for your help.

When you say "slips out of reverse", does it simply slip into neutral or does it actually make a grinding noise?
A grinding noise. The truck kind of shutters. The engine then revs and the truck will not move. So I guess it may be in neutral. What do you think?

I had this problem before and made a thread about it years ago (turned out I wasn't alone)

Only happened when I was reversing under load in high range with a quick stab of the throttle.

Found that if I waited a few seconds after shifting into reverse before applying throttle, the problem didn't occur, so that's what I've been doing ever since and never had the issue again :meh:

Ok cool. I've been reading up more and apparently you can have a valve spring switched out to stop the problem permanently
