I know I have posted about this before but I am at my wits end and am just looking for a bit of input.
You see, I have these beautiful sliders, the problem is that they sit only about 1/16th of an inch from the pinch weld toward the front fenders and when I hit bumps, even small ones, they knock on the body. I drives me MAD. There is only about 6 inches of problem area on each side. You can see where the powder coating has been chipped away on my sliders.
When I brought this up before, it was suggested that I bend the pinch weld up a bit. Well, let me tell you, I used a very hard piece of wood and a 5lb sledge and that pinch weld is not going anywhere. I even tried pliers, etc. to no avail.
I really don't want to grind the pinch weld away but I am thinking that may be the only way.
I have one more idea before that and am wondering what you guys think.
I thought maybe if I got some heavy duty small gauge heater hose or vacume hose, split it and glued it up on the pinch weld in the problem area, it may buffer this knocking. However, it may just wear away within days and it will be a waste of time.

install slider upside down and land on it really really hard?

try tilting the upper part of the slider down by stacking washers behind the upper bolt hole.

I will give this a shot. The thought of a spacer had crossed my mind, it just seemed like it would be compromising the overall strength of the setup.
I guess you have to rob Peter to pay Paul sometimes.
Thanks for the input.

No.

That is fairly involved and expensive. Not to mention, I would really hate to spend more money just to make my $850 sliders sit 1/4 inch lower.

Thank you for the input.

A 1" body lift costs about $65, IIRC, and is not terribly complicated. There was a recent thread on it. Not trying to talk you into it, if your mind's made up that's fine, just thought the info might help.

You have not hit the thin flap hard enough. They will get out of the way. Bigger pliers or a bigger hammer or maybe big brother.

i agree with jungle man on this.
this is your easiest fix and wont effect the use of the sliders.
if you add one washer per brkt, the slider will drop enough to make a big difference.

$3.4 per gallon!!!!!!
you guys gotta run premiun in your 80's?
$2.7 for reg. in colorado

Jack it up from the slider and let the sliders self clearance the pinch weld. Put something in between the slider and weld so that the pretty powder coating doesn't get dinged.

Nope, premium is closer to $3.90. That is the price for 87 baby!
I was up by Redding, CA over the weekend and there were a couple of stations that had regular fuel for $3.69 per gallon.
That is just f***ing gouging and that is all there is to it.

Thanks for the input, BTW.

dude, just slip a long screwdriver or prybar between pinch and slider, push hard enough, and it bends! (suggested by Ken, and it works) :)

man thats a bummer, crazy gouging is what it looks like....:frown:
sorry to hear it's alot higher (by a whole $1.00 per gal) out west than it is here.

Tried that, with screw drivers and prybars. I am 210 lbs and not a weekling by any stretch of the imagination. That pinch weld is not going anywhere unless I land on a boulder without the sliders on. (Hey, maybe that is the answer :D )
I am telling you, all I succeeded in doing was chipping up a bunch of paint and making way for rust.

I am very surprised at how sturdy the pinch welds are.

The washer stacking is probably my next try.

your only gonna need one or two at the most per mount.
loosen your top bolts only first and see how much the rail drops, check your clearance and shim accordingly.

:D

try the washers, when i built mine they were close, and then when i tightened them up they were really close. They would tap on the pinch weld so i spaced them down by putting washers on the upper part of the bracket and not the bottom bolt. Worked for me.

Rubber would not last in between these surfaces. You need something puncture resistant like plastic. Or you could use a strip of metal atop a strip of rubber so the pinch weld cannot penetrate. This would completely muffle the tapping sound. A couple layers of ordinary tire innertube rubber with a strip of metal in line with the pinch weld would do it. Weatherstrip glue will hold the rubber to the top of the slider and the metal strip to the top of the rubber.
