I printed off your "Camping List" off your site. This is probably the most complete list I have seen.

I have used about everything there is for sleeping mats/mattresses in the past 35+ years and this is the most comfortable & lightweight/compact I have found...not cheap...but I never want for a good nights sleep when camping/backpacking with my Exped Down Air Mattress...just got back from Alaska and it was superb.

You are welcome. :) I have started a rev #2 which will be more detailed and hopefully dynamic on the web (for example, enter the number of days travelled and climate zone, and it will spit out a list. I will also include estimated weights, which will help with GVW considerations.

When I weighed all of my gear (individually) a few months ago, it was a real eye opener.

Yes, placing the tarp over the rig will minimizing the loss of "radiation heat" but not thermal heat.

Without the tarp during the night (especially on clear cloudless night), your rig will undergo the rapid loss of radiation heat (not thermal heat, again) that causes the condensation to build up on the glass & metal inside.

Does the condensation build up on the windows if you crack a few windows? I have the ventshades and could do this without fear of it raining overnight.

I've had sucessful comfort with a folding foam pad (wal-mart cheap) with an expedition series (I think) 2" therma-rest. The harder foam reduced the textures on the floor of my 80 (third row seat hooks) and then the soft comfort of the therma-rest.
 
I just put a platform into my '94. I had a special requirement to work with, though: The Cruiser's going to be parked at a location remote from my house, and I wanted to be able to put the 2nd seats down and just take the platform with me. I built the platform out of 1/2" plywood, and sized it to run right up to the 2nd seats when they're folded forward. The platform sits about 4" above the wheel wells, which provides a lot of storage space. When there are people who need the seats, I'll unscrew the platform from its three supports, remove the supports, and lay the plywood flat on the floor. I cut openings in it so that when the seats fold back down they can clamp into the cleats on the floor. I had to raise the cleats about 1/2" so they would catch. I added 7" hinged "wings" on each side of the platform so I could utilize the space above the wheel wells but still fit the platform flat on the floor when I need to.

That foam sounds nice, but I'll be sleeping on my Thermarest when I have to sleep in the Cruiser. I'd rather use a tent, actually -- the platform's mainly for storage. By the way, it souncs like there are advantages to putting a tarp over the car, but it would have to be tied down pretty securely or the wind would have a lot of fun with it.
 
hmmm, I like the kmart matress idea...if it has a leveling thing...why not level it backwards and not have drawers? :)
 
I'll also chime in agreeing with Andy's comments. I put my old thermarest on top of a twin size inflatable mattress and am just fine.

Do not buy ANYTHING from REI!!!! They donate money to the organizations who shut our trails down

They have even been supporters of the Sierra club which shuts mountain bike trails and ski areas down and if you have ever been in there they sell ski stuff and mountain bikes.

Look at the link below. Im glad they promote education and getting outdoors but these organizations only want "humanized power" read the first paragraph

We should also start a sticky that lets OHVr's know what stores and shops donate money to shut our sport down. Im new to the cruiser scene but have been riding dirtbikes forever and have been involved for a while.

Did you know Eddie Mcstiffs in Moab doesnt like 4x4'rs ????? The list is very surprising. Sorry didnt mean to hijack the thread. If you can support Cabelas

I use a foam pad and one of those thick heavy sleeping bags as a mattress so if it gets to chilly I hop in.double duty and a spear.

Ditto on REI- f*****g holier-than-thou socialist yuppie ***holes.

Cabelas is supportive of off-roaders, as is Bass Pro Shops.

I apologize for my outburst. :)
 
REI promotes organizations that shut down ski areas and mountain bike trails while they sell ski equipment and mountain bikes?

That doesn't seem to be a very good business model.
 
Update

I bought an Aero-bed Queen. It is extremely comfortable. The problem is that it is approx 10" tall. This makes it a little too close to the roof of the truck for me. Some said that the air bed will make you freeze in cooler climates, they are correct. So now I have purchased a 2.5" memory foam with a 1.5" pillow topper for the Cruiser. (Costco) I also have purchased a bed blanket warmer via internet. The warmers were designed for truckers sleeping in their cabs. The warmer should be in a couple of days. Next week I will set up and give you a report.
This could be the setup for cooler climate situations.
But the aero-bed is great in warmer temps.
Some have said that memory foam doesn't work as well in cooler temps. But hopefully with the bed warmer it will not be a problem.

Sleeping in the Cruiser has its advantages. You don't have to worry about rain storms,Bears, etc. I just need to work out the kinks. I was going to add a tent to my 101, but decided against it. I will use my 101 trailer for all my camping goodies, and the bed is always set up for sleeping. I will be extremely mobile then. The 101 is a great little trailer and you can't feel it behind you in an 80. I put about 3K miles on it back in May.

When hunting I will pull my dog trailer behind. There is a lot of storage in the dog trailer for camping goodies.
