As most of us are aware, the wiper motors on FJ40s have all been discontinued by Toyota. As long as there's rain, it's a matter of time before it becomes a showstopper issue for us. Bidding up NOS on eBay isn't going to work for long. Several folks have come up with alternative motors that can be adapted for us, but with the possible exception of early motors on top of the windshield, I have yet to see a straightforward solution.

To make things more complicated, there have been numerous part #'s used throughout the years. I know there's a smaller one from '75 to '77, and then a larger one from 9/77 onwards that requires a bigger cover. I'm starting this thread to capture what's been used, what variations are out there, and what each one looks like. If there are some commonalities among these, we can start to look for a substitute.

I'll start with what I know.

01/75 - 09/77 p/n 85120-90303
09/77 - later p/n 85120-90308

Other part numbers:
85120-90802
85120-90804
85120-90808
85110-60030

The FJ55 motor, p/n 85110-90303 is known to have been used in FJ40s.

I see several attributes that need to be met:
  1. Size to fit within the cover
  2. Bracket (Can the existing one be bolted onto a different motor?)
  3. Electrical plug (Can a substitute's plug be replaced by the OEM plug?)
  4. Handle (Is this universal or unique to our rigs? If it's unique, can it be swapped onto the substitute motor?)

I don't have a photo of the one on my 1979 RHD 12V BJ40 but here's 85120-90808.

This is:
  • for 12V only
  • for LHD only
  • fitted August 1981 to April 1986
  • used in BJ40, BJ43, BJ45, BJ46, HJ47, FJ4# models

(As I recall, I uplifted this photo from eBay quite some time ago.)

Motor is a Common School Bus Wiper Motor Model: 16-M-900 from Midwest bus parts and it’s the same physical size as my Toyota motor.

Do the 3 mounting bolts have the same spacing as Toyota? In other words, is it possible to the take bracket from a Toyota motor and put it on the bus motor?

Does the crank handle fit Toyota?

I cant tell you what you would have to do on a 40, I mounted mine in a 55 but I did have to enlarge the bottom two holes and the bell crank will fit but mine was welded to the factory motor so I opted to buy a new bolt on bell crank for this motor.

I have more pictures here and link the delay switch also. https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/target-carrier.796065/page-20#post-9451046

Wex offers many motors and you may find one that is a better fit to your 40 here; http://ecommerce.cadel.ca/img/media/wexco_2012.pdf

Can you elaborate on the bolt-on bell crank? Which one have you found to match the original?

The gear shaft on both gear boxes had the same tapper but the factory gear box crank arm is non removable and the new gearbox uses a bolt to secure the crank arm allowing you clock it in the correct position for your application.

I just ordered this arm to simplify my install. http://www.midwestbusparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=16_312&products_id=1994

Well does anyone know if there is a way to re-wire the connector from a 76 (2 wire like in post 2) to work with a later 3 wire set up like is shown in post #3. Back in December I bought a supposed 76 wiper motor off flea bay. Well this afternoon I went to install. Blew fuse instantly. There's gotta be a way. The connectors match up but obviously the wiring is all a little different.
Oh and when I say 2 wire versus 3 wire I am talking about the difference where u see them soldered onto the flat base plate. The connectors are both 4 wire with the later model having a separate ground lug.

No number visible LHD 12V with intermittent

As you can see the same wire colour codes are used but they are in a different position in the connector.

And yes, I blew a fuse while testing.

Let me make sure I understand correctly: You need an intermittent wiper motor (90808 type), but you got one without intermittent (90308 type) and it blows the fuse?

Here's the wiring diagram from the Factory Service Manual for a 12V without intermittent:

Correct.
I have an intermittent on my 12V 1984 HJ47 RHD.

I tested the 2 spares on the car. The LHD intermittent works fine. The 90308 blew the fuse.
I then checked the wires and noticed the difference.

I am pretty confident you can make it work if you rearrange the wires on the connector even though I have not found a wiring diagram with an intermittent wiper.
