What would you do? Should I trade my pretty clean 84 carbed pickup single cab (133k original miles) with a fresh built engine with all genuine toyota parts along with a new aisin clutch (new timing kit, oil pump, ect. ect.) that runs and drives great....... for a.......efi 87 4runner (288k original miles) thats reasonably clean but doesnt run. hmmmmmmmmmmm I CANT DECIDE!!!

no I wouldnt , I would trade for a 85 4runner only it has the efi and factory solid axle .. unless you want ifs which rides nicer and is capable to, but i think you can find someone that will trade you a nice running 87 for your truck

I vote no also. If you want the efi you can swap in a 22RE. Sam at Lowe is just finishing up his.

What you described is by no means and even trade in my mind.

This. If you're set on EFI, I'd stick with a known vehicle and swap the electronics in.

OK very cool guys! Thanks for all your input! Its just that 4runners are becoming more and more scarce these days where as single cab pickups seem to be everywhere.

You said the runner didn't run so you should be able to score it for a song. I picked up mine for $500 cash with a bad engine.

Or trade your clean truck for some decent money, then trade about 1/4 of that money for the non running truck.

X10 on not trading. Especially trading a solid axle truck for an IFS truck. If you have a fresh rebuilt carb engine I would just stick with that. If you're set on EFI it's not that hard to swap. You just need to find a donor vehicle.

Decision has been made to keep my truck. Especially since I started working on the runner (its my buddy's) and have found that everything in the engine bay needs attention; belt, hoses, wiring, radiator, head gasket, timing chain, battery ect. ect. The body is nice though, but not enough to want me to go through the entire engine.... I am very interested in doing EFI, anyonw here done that before?

I just finished mine. I put a 22RE out of an 87 4Runner in an 80 Pickup.

If you're set on a 4Runner, buy the friend's for a few hundred and swap the body over to your truck along with the EFI.

I helped him buy it, $1600. He is set on restoring it anyhow so its a done deal. But i really want want EFI. Any good threads out there? better yet who wants to swing out this way and get they're hands dirty??? :D

Haha, that is almost what I got my 86 4Runner for, I paid $500.00 for mine...sorry, I'm not trying to top your good deal.

If yours was running you definitely did better than me. Mine has a nice hole in the block and is a 3.0 auto, but I have another v6 to swap in and I already have the r150 5spd and computer if I want to go that way eventually. Of course I am now looking for a lexus 4.0 to mothball for the next stage of the build. I hope to get a build thread started once I get the motor swapped and get it moving under its' own power. Probably BJ spacers and new leafs for now, with the 4.0 swap, SAS, blah, blah on down the line.

But if you can find one for under a grand in decent shape, you should jump on it. I wish I had more space, I would buy a couple just to have around, you know just in case...

Hijack off.
