Well I purchased an H42 mated with a tc from a '76 40 to swap out the J30 in my '72 40. I was cleaning the considerable grease and oil off of it today and uncovered a crack in the Tcase. Looks like I am going to learn how to fit my 3 speed tcase to the H42. Not entirely sure I'm up for it. I was planning on the swap late next week. Also planning on mini Truck power steering install. I have all the components I believe. Maybe I'll switch to that project. Man this really took the wind out of my sails. Ok, bitching over.

Not hard at all now that you have all the parts, the install should be pretty straight forward. I did mine 6 months back and the hardest part for me was sourcing all the parts.

A good welder could probably fix that for less than a hundred bucks.
Maybe even without stripping out the gears.
I think that is a known weak spot, and there a few vendors on this site that make a bracket that goes on using existing bolts on the TC to mount it.
Maybe try Georg at Valley Hybrids. He is in Sacramento and is a LC guru.

Dang I've had windless sails many times working on cruisers. The good news is we have some dang good vendors. You could probably give georg @orangefj45 a call. He'll know and most likely have what you need. Have you peeked inside the tranny to look at the gears?

I am still having my crushed plans consolation beer so I have not separated the tranny/tcase yet. A previous mudder stated I could have the case welded. I admit freely that the sum total of what I know about tcase intricacies wouldn't cork an ants ass, but I think if the case is cracked then it has also moved and seems like that would throw a tolerance out somewhere. That alone means I'll move the 3 speed tcase to the 4 speed tyranny. I need to look on the bright side here. At least I'll get a look at the main shafts on the tranny for condition and I'll have a lower low gear. Now i need to mine the mud gold for info and spend some more money.

You will need the transition era (74) input gear that mates the 4 speed spines to the 3 speed case gears and either the pto spacer in your tcase or use the pto gear that is in the 3 speed case. Also needed is the input bearing for the tcase to match the 4 speed shaft. I bought the pieces as a kit years ago when I swapped to the V8 engine I also swapped in a 4 speed but kept the 3 speed tcase. If you already sourced 4 speed drive shafts you will need to swap out the flanges on your tcase and pinions so the bolt patterns match...

That's a bummer but it's not the end of the world.
;-)

I have bare cases, seals, gaskets, rebuild kits, used parts and pieces and whatever else you might need to get this put back together.

Feel free to call or text me.

I'd say not likely. It looks like someone already tried the jb weld repair. That needs completely removed from the defect before you try to repair it.

That crack is heavily oil contaminated. That's a nightmare to weld ........
Don't even bother. You can find a good replacement case easily enough. I bet I've got at least 5 of them.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. I'm over gather initial disappointment now and am wrapping my head around the next step. I'll definitely be talking ton George about options. Updates to follow for sure

George that's a very generous offer thanks. That might work out. I'll talk to you soon. I have a cabin in Truckee.

PTO gear from a three speed will not work on a four speed. 10 verses 16 spline. Believe rear bearing from either the three speed case or the four speed case will work. Other then the input gear and that bearing the parts off the four speed should work in the conversion. The five bolts that hold the T case to the transmission have a different thread pitch and can't be switched. Have the four speed T case to grab parts from will save you a lot in the three speed T case to four speed transmission. While apart I would inspect the splines on the four speed tailshaft, those wear a lot more then the three speed.

You are correct as usual. Thanks for reminding me of the details that I forgot/got wrong. The engine swap was my first mechanical project bigger than oil changes/tune ups. I had a complete donor 4 speed transmission and transfer case to combine with my 3 speed tcase so that made it a little easier. I followed Jim's @Downey instruction manual that came with his kit. I reused my original drive shafts since I made up the drivetrain length with the longer 4 speed transmission. I still need to swap out the top cover for the 60 series version to have better shifter placement.

I just spoke with Georg.
He is going to set me up with a new empty 4 speed case, seals, bearings etc so I can rebuild the 4 speed TC. Seemed like the better option for my use.
I have never attempted anything as technical as this. It should be interesting.
Stay tuned for upcoming newbie questions!
