I just bought my second FJ40, and am a newbie to this site, so my apologies if this has been covered somewhere else, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I'm looking for a reliable list of serial number ranges for FJ40s. The FJ I bought is serial number 20773, and a '76 model manufactured in Sept. '75. From a couple other websites I've found, it looks like this serial number starts the '76 year model cruisers. I'm wondering if I might have stumbled onto something really cool in that it's the first cruiser off the line with factory disc brakes on the front. Things like that don't normally happen to me, but I'd like to find some definitive resources to check my serial number against, rather than just some site I came across on the interwebs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It may or may not be the first, and you're not likely to ever find out for sure, but it if Sept '75 is accurate it is definitely one of the first.

I wonder where they got their data? It puts your's in Aug '75, which is pre-disc brakes according to the commonly accepted date of Sept.

Does your engine serial number line up with their other chart? 2f-110120?

This other chart also lists the same number as the first one for the '76 model year

Mine is about halfway through the model year.

Thanks for the reply. My engine serial number is 2F042095. Looks like you got off a line on the chart. Looks to me like it lines up pretty well with September '75. That's why I had the questions about that chart you found. It's the same one I found as well. According to that, 207793 starts August '75, and 207795 starts September '75. I have a hard time believing they only made 2 cruisers in August.

These charts show completely different produciton numbers per year. I wonder if either one is even close to right. Puzzling. John

It appears CCOT used the same production date chart as SOR http://www.sor.com/catframe.sor . Was there really only two FJ40s made in Aug. 75? It does look like someone used a punch of some type to mess up the SEP stamp on your VIN plate is is that suppose to be AUG. My OCT stamp is very clear on my Oct. 75 produced 76.

Funny how even a company like SOR can have wrong info on their website. The door VIN plate started 3/69 not 68. http://www.sor.com/catvin.sor

I called SOR, and they told me the date/SN chart they used was directly from Toyota. They also said that unfortunately, there has been so much turnover at Toyota, there is no one left with extensive knowledge of serial numbers going back that far. Best they could tell me, odds are pretty decent it's the first one, but I may never actually know for sure. Makes a great story, though.

I guess there's always that chance, but as a '76 model, it should have come with discs. Unless it's really been one of the last '75 models and titled wrong all this time.
