Hey All - After a quite comprehensive restoration, I've decided to let this beauty go to a new lucky owner. I originally found the unrestored truck here on ih8mud :) If you're looking for a meticulously gone through and restored USA spec 40, this might be your dream rig. Check it out here: BAT Listing 1977 FJ40

Cheers!

really liking this. Even commented on BaT" What road shall i take home to boulder from Grand junction?! what trail shall i try on way!?" but BaT wouldn't allow it. The Rust Doctor is well known even out here excellent work. I'll be bidding after the Olive one goes off tomorrow. thanks!

It'd be the coolest original 40 in Boulder...and you could absolutely drive it home any which route you'd like, though I70 could be a little sketchy at FJ40 speeds :steer:

I saw that one and have been keeping track. Well done on keeping the patina! You’ve done great work on that one! I predict it will be north of $40k.

Nice build… I tend to agree with @sogafarm … I know with my own rig though. $40K is a tough number when these upgrades cost almost as much. Good luck.

Not a fan of 'patina' myself, given I used to drive them (in Boulder) when they looked like that because I could not afford to repair them. But I'm sure it'll do very well with the crowd that likes the look of the outdoor-stored-and-used 40s they used to see around Boulder and the West.

Mechanically, this rig is awesome. Very well done. '77 is awesome with its second year disc brakes and first year pop-out rear vents: the first steps into modern comfort. Good luck with the sale.

Thanks....yeah, 40 basically would just cover parts, materials, metal work. Then add in the countless hours of research, labor, consulting, driving back and forth the the paint shop, tracking everything, etc, etc and 40 seems cheap... I know the market is soft, but I'll shed some tears if someone gets it for under 50. I had $12k to the body shop alone (and it was in relatively good shape to begin with). I also gave up my entire shop space for 3 years to keep track of everything. It's an expensive and involved endeavor for sure, and I don't expect to recoup everything, especially in this whacky market. Generally, I hope the market rewards those of us who spend the energy and resources to do such projects so we can continue to do them. 40k is the I'm-never-doing-this-again number and I will be crying for days. :p

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I know the patina isn't for everyone, but I couldn't bring myself to wipe away that original finish on the exterior. I love the character. Luckily there are plenty that come up for sale with shiny new exterior paint for those who prefer that. That said, if someone really wanted to, it'd be a relatively easy job to paint the rest of the outside since no metal work would be needed and whatnot. Thanks for the good words -

Yeah. Was MTB’ing at Three Sisters and this was in the lot. Couldn’t stop smiling. Hope the owner didn’t get mad from me drooling all over the windows. I’d just blame my dog anyways…

That recent olive one went for 60k with new paint, hopefully yours will get close. Prices are hit or miss past couple of years. Hope you put on a reserve just in case.

Saw that. That yellow one looks nice, though I'm not crazy about the upholstery color. I like original vibes myself. My reserve isn't very high, and if it just barely hits it, I will be crying for days....really hoping it gets close to that yellow one price-wise though. I'm wanting to find that someone out there why absolutely loves it and appreciates the countless hours and $$ that went into it and is willing to step up a bit since you'd for sure pay a shop a lot to do the same thing. The market is the market though. Thanks for support!

I'm currently your high bidder :) anything you can share that would not let me leave the auction as the final high bidder? forgive my ignorance, but does this have power steering? and i think i'm looking at this right, are front shackles "reversed" or just attached normally? thanks!

Glad you like it:) It makes me smile whenever I drive it. It’s like stepping back in time and it gets admired whenever I take it out. People want to talk about it and I learned not to take it out if I’m in a hurry. I’ve been told by a couple of people that it was the best looking 40 they’ve ever seen. Also see commentary in the BaT listing. And I think the pictures don’t do it justice. Of course that’s all subjective, but it’s top-notch and you would be proud to own it. I put countless hours of love into it and I’m very particular. I’ve had nothing but positive feedback from anyone who’s seen it and praise from all of my fellow Toyota geeks, including Toyota shops who’ve seen it. I’ve seen quite a few Landcruisers and it really is an excellent example of an original. Nothing went untouched. No expense spared. In my opinion, investing in a sorted, original configuration, Cruiser as nice a mine is a solid way to go. In the spirit of keeping it original, I chose not to add PS. It drives quite well without it. The bigger 33” tires help with that. Steering is tight. I’ve got an old Jeep without PS and it’s a bear to drive…the Cruiser is not. It only takes a little extra muscle to turn tight at very slow speeds. That’s part of what gives it charm though. If I’m not mistaken, adding PS properly requires welding to the frame and possibly cutting into the body. I did not want to do that. The shackles I believe are considered anti-inversion. No modifications were made to the frame or axle or anything.

I truthfully cannot imagine the new owner not being completely happy with it, unless they’re just impossible to please.

What an awesome rig!

I just bought mine a month go with very similar original vibes and mechanically sorted, but yours is certainly next level. I wish I would have known about it! I saw your comment about the rear heater core…if it ever comes to memory where you acquired it please reach out. Mine sprung a small pinhole leak. Best of luck on the sale, I’m watching!
