Hey guys, I posted this in Paint and Body, but figured I'd ask for input locally as well.

Any input on Rustoleum self etching primer?

I bought 2 cans to primer my aluminum roof rack when I painted it, and within 10 seconds both quit spraying completely. Had plenty of volume left in the cans, just bogged right up almost immediately. I didn't have any solvent around to clean up the heads, but is this typical?

Shouldn't I have been able to get way more use out of each can before clogging up completely?

Thinking I just got 2 bad batches, but figured I would ask.

When they quit working, I went ahead and just put a bunch of good coats with Flat black on it, but a few spots have stripped off in about 2" sections. Gonna have to recoat, so looking for other's experiences.

Any similar experiences?

I hate to be a hater, but Rattle cans of primers just don't do it.

I agree that you got a bad batch, although the company will say that you did not shake it up enough.

My opinion is that any primer has to be two part. The best to me is a two part epoxy.

I get southern poly stuff, and mix what I need, shooting out of a harbor freight gun.

Thanks Kelly!

Yeah, I need to pull the trigger on getting a compressor for my garage. Might pick your brain this weekend on HP and specs for a decent garage compressor.

I spray primer a couple times a year, so if you can coordinate to strip it and have it ready to paint, it would take very little extra minutes for me to spray it at the same time. For finish coat black, I really like the non gloss, non flat John Deere black. The primer does not have UV protection.

That's awesome, thanks Kelly!

I'll definitely get it stripped for the next run then. No rush on my end.

I shoot the same stuff.. so between the 2 of us.. you have a bunch of opportunities.. could be white.. could be black.. and use same gun..

I sit corrected, and bow to your knowledge. Buckroseau is where I got my data from, and that is about how long ago he last posted.....

Still like blitz black topcoat anyway. Tough as nails at $50 a gallon with activator.

My hypothesis has always been that spray paint cans slowly leak their propellant over time. A new can that sits on the shelf for a long time would therefore have a normal amount of paint, but only spray for a short time and stop working with a large amount of paint left.

There is a window for topcoating the epoxy with a topcoat. Or we can dust it with a fill primer possibly.
