Searching for 2B Head Gasket

3B gaskets for the exhaust manifold ,intake manifold, thermostat , and water pump along with valve cover will fit the 2B these are the same I have used these on my 2Bs in the past.
You will find that the external things like alternator , maninfolds ,IP, Edic, oil pan and gasket , water pump , thermostat heater hoses and hardlines are all the same as the 3B and probably the same as some of the B parts in that year range of your engine
Make sure when ordering 3B parts keep in the 81-83 range and I would assume the same for the B but I have little experience with the B like others have.

Hey can you PM the price on the headgasket unless you dont mind sharing on this site the cost including shipping I am thinking of picking up a spare since I have two 2Bs

... RedHeadedStepChild you say it boils over try removing the rad cap then starting the engine look into the spout and see if you can see tiny bubbles rising up....if in fact it is a gasket leak this would cause pressure in the system and with the cap installed it would act just like the engine over heating since the combustion pressure build up will force itself out the over flow.

So, I pushed the arse end of the ol' girl out of the garage last night, hooked the battery back up and cranked'er over. As the massive cloud slowly dissipated over my overly uptight suburban neighborhood:whoops:, I popped the radiator cap and had a look. Pretty regularly (about every 2 seconds) a bubble would bubble on up and out.

...PS. I'm aware that when posting in the past I've said I thought 11115-56120 should fit this 2B engine (and therefore would supersede 11115-56020/21). And I still suspect this could be the case. But I'm not certain...

Quoted from Dave's Response to my inquiry..."The 11115-56020 Head gasket is listed for your year and month of build for the 2B, this part number subs up to 11115-56120."
So there you have it, a 56120 coming my way.
Again, when I get this, I'll take pics with it on the block and on the head...

Beno what motor is that listed for a B or 3B and how is it listed in US market I thought you are not able to get diesel parts....or is there some parts you can get such as Canadian listed diesel parts.

I can--amazingly enough--get a lot of diesel parts--mainly 3B/2H/1HZ/2L/2LT;

And anything that crosses over to those engines. For example, I can get a water pump for a 1HD-T but not the timing belt (different than 1HZ). Really weird things like that.

The part above is not listed as anything in the EPC since I am going directly to my Toyota master file on the Toyota side and not EPC side.

Basically--it's a place I can just put part numbers in and see if I can get them.

Do you know the brand/source of this recently-fitted head gasket (that may be leaking now)?

I believe 11115-56120 fits just the B and 2B (and is incompatable with the 3B) but I'm interested in what your Master File says too Beno.

Knowing that the 11115-56120 head gasket isn't on my EPC and that it's important to my BJ40 makes me wonder how many other similarly hidden parts there are out there.

Here in New Zealand, if I go to an official Toyota parts source they can source my part from the Toyota New Zealand warehouse where a stock is kept of all the fast moving parts for this country or they can they can source it from Japan (so long as it is still "live" on their database and not declared obsolete).

For a short period in our past however, Toyota NZ and other new-car importers (in an effort to reduce the desirability of the used-import models so as to protect new-car sales) simply refused to supply parts for any vehicle that they hadn't officially imported.

If there is any country that can't get a Toyota part that I can get, then this must due to local shenanigans (like we experienced) IMO.

Hmmm. You just made me look up that timing belt Beno and my epc says it is 13568-19065 for a May 1992 onwards 1HDT in a HDJ80 and also claims it's the same as for the 1HZ in a HZJ80 of the same period. :meh:

My example might have been the other way around--I can get the Tbelt and I cannot get the water pump so some mixture of the two.

Exciting day!

Don't forget to check for cracks on the precups before you put it back together that would suck to go through all that work only to have a precup breakup and drop into the cylinder.
Magniflux the head if you have time and cash just so you can sleep comfortably at nights knowing all things are good.

All apart...

Ok, took it all apart today.
First off. The HG in there certainly appears to have been correct.
On the head.
Next to the new one.
Overlaying old and new.

And finally, the small strip between the valves.
I didn't include the rearmost (#1 or 4?) because it looked fine.
If you look closely you can see the hint of a crack in the first, with each successive chamber looking worse.
Not sure what exactly happened with the last two cylinders (especially the last), but it looks like someone dropped a bag of pebbles in there prior to start up.

Added these pics of the cylinders....you can see the clots of flaky rusty Yuck that dropped out as I pulled the head, and in the second shot, you can see with gloppy coolanty crud on top of the piston...can't say whether this dripped out as I lifted or if it had been slowly leaking in.
What do you all think, could the pitting in the forward 2 cylinders be from rusting-then-running cycle?

So at the end of all this, I think the head is the real issue.
:bang:
So, I'm going to follow with a question I ordinarily wouldn't ask...
What do you think about opening up the cracks, welding them up and grinding back to form?
I know this is not an ideal solution, but can one even find a 2B head anymore?
Pretty bummed right now...:crybaby:

I think you're probably right about the head being the issue...

The rear two cylinders look excellent but the front two are just the opposite..

It could be just my an illusion but if these are really cracks then I think they're probably the fatal ones:

No. 1 cylinder:
No1Crack.webp

No.2 cylinder:
No2Crack.webp

I've seen cracks between valves before but not between precups and valves.

And that looks like corrosion pitting on those forward two cylinders to me. (As though the head was on an engine that was discarded at some point with corrosive liquid inside the first two cylinders .... and then brought back into service.)

If those are indeed cracks (and taking into account the severe corrosion on No. 1 cylinder) I don't think that head is worth any salvaging attempt.

But all is not lost..

If you have some dosh in your pocket and you have the time to do research (and confirm a proper match) there do appear to be brand new heads available.

Here's a sample from some brief searching I just did now:

NewHead.webp

KiwiSource.webp

But first clean up your block and check that that (and the rest of the engine) is in acceptable condition of course...

Wow!

720 NZD is WAY less than I would have guessed.
Thanks Tom. My name's Jim BTW.
What were those sites?

You're familiar with the first site Jim ... That's cruiserparts.net (which if I'm not mistaken is where your BJ44 came from)..

The second one is: cylinderheads.co.nz.

Here's the link to the NZ supplier where they have good pics for making a thorough visual comparison:
http://www.cylinderheads.co.nz/100-Toyota-Cylinder-Head

Interesting that the pics show the precups, freeze plugs, valve guides and valve seats already fitted for the $720 price tag too.

I think I'd want to verify that.

And I'd also want to clarify/verify whether it's really new or whether it is "refurbished second-hand".

(I know the advertising says "old" but that word used in that context is ambiguous...)

If it is new then it probably comes from Taiwan but that isn't necessarily bad because that's where most of the parts supplied by Engine Australia come from AFAIK and I haven't heard anything negative about them.

And if you were to buy from NZ you'd need to question them carefully on their packaging because while I've found handlers generally take care with shipping within New Zealand, the handlers in other countries seem to take pleasure in trying and to damage contents. (But I'm probably biased in laying the blame outside NZ because I admit we can sometimes have those types working in our freight handling systems too.)

I think I'd want it "wooden-crated" when being shipped across the world.

PS. I recommend asking questions and doing lots of comparison checks to be sure you're getting the right head if you go down this route.

From reading the advertising it appears that some heads are made for different valve covers (apart from the problems we've heard about with different valve sizes etc) so I think that's something to beware of.

Thanks again. I can't say how much I appreciate how much you've helped me, not just this thread but all the others I've been able to reference in the past.

I decided to add this to help flesh this thread out for future reference:
