1989 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 – 5.3L LS Swap – 4L80E Transmission
Up for sale is my 1989 FJ62 Land Cruiser. I’ve owned it since summer 2022 and have put approximately 20,000 miles on it. This has been my camping and road-trip rig, including a cross-country drive from California to New York and multiple trips to Colorado. It has been extremely reliable and has never left me stranded.
The LS swap was completed in 2020 by a retired NASCAR mechanic (now passed). It was his personal daily driver at the time. The truck has spent its life in California.
Drivetrain & Mechanical
• 5.3L LS V8 – ~150,000 miles
• 4L80E automatic transmission
• Chassis mileage: ~370,000 miles
• Ironman 4x4 suspension lift (installed 2024)
• Runs strong, accelerates well, and brakes confidently
The truck drives great overall. The current tires are worn and cause a vibration between 20–30 mph — they will need replacement. I previously had a great set of 33s on it, but those went to another project.
Interior
• BMW 3 Series front seats with matching rear seat
• Torfab seat brackets
• All electronics function properly (windows, mirrors, etc.)
Interior is comfortable and practical — a great setup for long trips.
Exterior & Body
• Some dents and surface rust present
• Originally from the California high desert; minor surface rust developed after time in San Francisco’s salt air
Important Note:
I recently received a quote from a reputable Bay Area body shop for a full repaint, including dent repair, totaling $3,900 to bring the exterior to excellent condition. I haven’t pursued it since this is currently my daily driver, but this shows the cosmetic issues can be addressed affordably if desired.
