What would be the cause, or is this typical of the 100 series to have some rust developing at the top edge of the windshield, and in that roof gutter that has the plastic strip?

Rest of the vehicle is rust free including the frame, driveline, and suspension components.

Not normal, but not unheard of either - usually related to poor windshield replacements. Notice that the rust matches up perfectly with the marks on the trim strip, I bet somebody pried that off with a screwdriver or something sharp instead of a plastic trim tool and scratched through the paint. If you have rust above the glass as well, definitely time to line up both a good glass and body shop. Have the glass pulled, rust ground back and repaired, then the glass reinstalled properly by someone who knows 100s.
