Well, I didn’t build it, but I have to replace it. After removing an old deck, I discovered the basement walls were made of old timber. The old part of the house was built late 1800,s in an old coal mine area. Sawdust was used as insulation. Original siding is 1x6, then someone put tar paper that looks like brick then the cedar siding. The basement is all hand hewn logs/timber. Anyone else seen sawdust insulation?

I’ve seen sawdust insulation on old timers, but never stick built foundation below grade.

IDK, sawdust was dry and fresh but exterior wood was all rot. They knew how to make SD in those days.

I have seen wood ashes used in NY state.

Ashes, that’s interesting. A lot safer in regards to fire safety than sawdust.

Not milled, but cut some cedar posts and used a pair of old junk 40 hoods to build some firewood storage this weekend.

It's deceiving. I was hesitant, but then my lovely bride pointed out that the whole front is covered in filler with some kind of mesh in it. It's flaking off and looks to be 1/8" thick in places. The red one is an old split hood that someone actually welded together...
