Gotta' love your own reflection every now and again...

Just found your thread. So what are planning for rust and rehab work? Still getting this thing out now and then? How do your little ones like the truck?

Man, thanks. My 40 is overdue for version 3.0 I got plans but no money or time... :D

I hope to start on the rust removal first. It’s a running driving 40 so I hate to take it down for too much time.

I drive it all the time, puts a smile on my face every time too. My kids go bonkers for it, they can’t get enough time in it.

I’ve been hoarding parts for the redo 3.0 like the new ARB classic front bumper, new rigid light, an ARV locker and warn winch rebuild on the way.

Trying to decide just how far to go with another rework... LS swap, 4 link/coils, 5 speed... all still on the table.

I was at @87BJ74 sweet shop last night and we decided to roll up one of his 37's for a looky-loo on the 40. I don't know if I want to cut that much sheet metal to make them work... thoughts!? I am thinking 35's and lockers will get me down 99% of the trails I like to run.

Photochop...

33 x 10.5 with lockers have got me anywhere I have needed to go. Most places just lock the rear and can go 75% of the time. Your truck does look good with those tires.

Yeah 35’s haven’t been a bad decision... I just have a rule and that rule is “never go down a tire size when you can go up a tire size!” Probably picked it up somewhere in the south!

The only thing I hate about my 40 is the rear fender chop when it was built for 35s. Mostly, due to the lack of the factory radius when the surgery was performed.

If you do cut, keep the factory radius...

Thanks man, I have already cut out 2" and kept the factory lines... I am diggin' your 40!

So I went ahead and started into the old girl...

First up, a new motor for the winch. I smoked the old motor on a LONG Cruiser saving pull up a sand dune in northern Colorado. I was tipping off a sand dune ridge and was sure to tumble if the winch didn't work. It made a nearly full 150' pull up the dune and as I was respooling it gave up the ghost with about 15' of cable hanging out.

Before shot, looking pretty sad.

Yanked the old motor for the last time. The armature looked pretty good, the brushes were really worn and the soldering on the inside was cracked and broken in places causing the ultimate demise of the winch. If any can reuse the old guts I am happy to pass them along.

I bought this winch motor off Amazon and it works great... under $100 shipped.

New guts, the build quality looked great.

A little silicon on each end and bolted the new motor in place. I added fresh Mobile 1 and Lucas Stabilizer while I was in there. I have found it is water that kills winches so I seal them up pretty tight.

I splurged on a new control box for cosmetic reasons only. I am glad I did though it looks fresh and ready for some more wheelin'
