Anybody on here doing it? It is on April 18th. Never done it before, it always sounded fun...so this is the year to do it.

The wife and I are registered...so time to get in a bit of shape to handle the ride...

Rosarito Ensenada

Is this the bike ride put on by the SD Police Department? My GF and I have a few friends in the probation and criminal justice field and they have been inviting us for a few years now. My offer is always, I will drive behind and pick you up when you give up....... :D

Don't know who organizes the race. As far as I know, the proceeds go toward the Mexican Red Cross in Baja...The only "challenge section" is the hill that climbs gradually after mile marker 25 or so...that is quite a grind from what I hear...

Bike Ride Experience

I did it about 4 years in a row, in April and Oct., but after the last one I decided to quit going. The reason for this was because of a terrible fall one of my friends had going down the final winding hill into Ensenada. Some local kids or terrible adults had obviously spread gravel all over one of the sharp curves which resulted in several bad crashes. A large group was gathered in this location to watch the carnage. We were not drinking but many of the following crashes were from drunk individual that were running into others and not paying attention. Either way we could not get adequate medical attention and ended up taking him back to San Diego to stitch up a large chain ring gash and to scrub the road rash.

On the drive back I was hassed at the last check point while driving my FJ40 were they made me pull into inspection, unload everthing, while making my friend sit on the asphalt in the sun for about an hour. After much discussion and a few sodas and cigars we were on our way. Needless to say this was the last time I was in Mexico south of TJ. Maybe things are better managed now, but since then my large group of old ridding friends have not gone again.

However I am still eager to go south of the border again someday since its seems like many of you have had great experiences down there over the last few years. I know I had a lot of great experineces but it only took a second bad experience to change my mind for a while. The first one is another story.

It has been over 15 years for me, but my wife and I used to do that one alot when we were into cycling. It was more of a social fun ride that the other two- Tecate to Ensenada and the Mexicali to San Felipe rides we did.

A word of caution to anyone doing the ride. Like off-road racing down there, some of the inconsiderate spectators like to create hazards like mentioned in a previous post. Another tactic is to put their hands out for a high-five and then try to yank you off your bike. This is not BS- I saw it happen, and if I could have caught the little a-hole I would have beat his ass with my tire pump - His saving grace was my inability to run very fast in riding cleats.

The other big hazard you also have to deal with on coming traffic- It's run on the non-toll road and it can be real hairy. The last thing to worry about are the big freaking speed bumps as you enter the city of Ensenada. These things are like big brass stumps that will stop you cold if you hit one.

Have a great time, but remember - finishing in one piece is half the battle. You still need to get back across the border.

FWIW I have been going down Baja way for more than 15 years and after many occurences over the last few years or so on the racing side of things, tourist side and general drug lord vs pitiful law enforcement, I have decided to stay away for a little while. The booby trap incident mentioned by landcruising is a prime example of the attitude seen more and more down there. I have thought about doing that ride for awhile but for now I am regretfully over it. My .02
