My truck with factory rack barely fits now ( < 1" ) so there's no way to get in or out of the garage with an aftermarket rack mounted on the truck.

well, you only need to get in once with a sturdy tall rack and then clearance won't be an issue any more, the way houses are built nowadays...

hmmm, then again, that's where the Lexus with adjustable height suspension might shine?

Since this is now a faq I'll chime in on how my Yakima rack worked over x-mas break. One word...GREAT! Its purpose was to transport 5 peoples luggage from the Denver airport to Steamboat, CO. I bought one of those water proof bags to put the luggage in. It swallowed all luggage (I told em pack light or have wet clothes) The straps from the bag attached to the rack pefectly, and with the crossbar added the bag was a perfect fit. I had some room left which I used to strap in washer fluid bottles. So it enabled me to have 8 people in the cruiser (dad's 03 100) and carry all the luggage. There is a noticable increase in wind noise at highway speeds. The weak part of the system was the stock Toyota crossbars to which it was mounted. Thule has replacement bars that should fix this..but I think they are expensive...going against the point of this rack...it was way cheaper than the ARB and others. I have since purchased the locks that allow me to lock it to the Toyota rack..which it now is. I have also bought light mounting brackets (just need the lights). OK getting long winded, if you need to know more just ask.

Pic shows the "abuse" I put rack through...I am guy taking pic, not in it.

Ouch, cructches are an unfortunate accessory in Steamboat !

I have a full-length ARB on my '97. I have mixed feelings on the rack.

Good: This thing is bullet-proof. It has the mesh floor, so there are tons of places to lash to. It holds a load of stuff, including my 3-year-old's Peg Perego Land Cruiser! The wife likes the looks.

Bad: HEAVY. This thing is friggin heavy. It is a killer on fuel consumption, especially loaded down. It is very noisey at highway speeds. I can't put the truck in the garage...and I'm on stock springs with 120K miles on them.

If money were no issue, I'd go with Slee's rack. One that my wife could help me remove would be great, so that I can go rackless when I like.

Maybe I'll sell the ARB for $1500 and buy one of Christo's! Hell, maybe I'll sell the ARB for $90,000.00 and buy TLC's FZJ-60!! :flipoff2:

this roof rack are constructed all in aluminun, the only problem its sell in Venezuela for about 180 us$

Ok....so now I have searched....found the faq (yes I know I am a very talented) but the link to how cdan fixed his holes doesn't work....
did that tread get delated in an update or am I just not finding it? Where did you get the supplies for your method and are there any pictures?

Derek - do you think it's important to get the rails off? I was going to leave them on but I guess I'm a little worried about the rust.

I guess I could go one step at a time.

Does it rust underthere?
Just roll the truck over like my bro did. You can scrape off the old rack on the rocks, and the resulting bodywork will take care of the holes!

But seriously, who is going to see your roof anyway? With a proper susp. lift it is up there out of sight of all but basketball players. Any screw/washer combo and a little bit of sealer will do the job if you aren't too sloppy about it. Leave the rails in place, they reduce panel vibration. Plug the remaining 8 holes and put on a stronger rack to cover it all up.

 Hopefully Riley's taken care of his problem since this was a YEAR AND A HALF AGO that he posted that.

Howdy everyone !
Its been a while since my last post..( I`ve been busy beating up my poor 100 for the past few months !) But I wanted to tell you all about my recent experience with a Yakima Mega-Warrior rack.
I was in a pinch for time (Last-minute realization that my INTERIOR would not hold everything that I wanted to bring along on a 2-plus week trip to the Nevada Wilderness)...So I called around a bit, and finally found a local 4-wheel shop that actually had one in stock..so I bought it, (I even got a good deal!) ... slapped it on EASILY BY-MYSELF ...And began to HEAVILY overload it with over 300 lbs (Did I really just admit that?) and yes, its mounted to the O.E. racks` flimsy looking cross-bars ...in fact, the Friggin` cross-bars were actually bowed DOWNWARD in the center !) Oh, easy fix BTW..I grabbed a couple of 16 oz. water bottles (full) and crammed them between the c-bar and the roof to make the bars lay (somewhat) FLAT ..And I must say..I was a bit frightened by the thought of going off the pavement with this much weight on the stock rack...

So, Knowing that the WORSE thing that could happen would only be that I could lose EVERYTHING on the top of my rig (while also causing a fiery 10 car pile-up in my rear-view), I took off into the sunset loaded to-the-hilt inside AND out !

1200 miles later..after doing highway speeds of 100+ MPH, running at break-neck speed on HEAVILY rutted washerboard roads, scraping the rack (and the giant storage bags on top) through dense forests and brush, AND off-roading some of the steepest and roughest terrain that my 100 has ever seen.....The rack was still unscathed !

I was totally expecting a failure and had plenty of bungee cord and wire to "limp home" with...and I didnt need it. That was with only TWO stock cross-bars, even though I plan on adding a third, or even a fourth bar later to even out the weight a little bit better...I proudly report that I couldnt be happier about the $350 I spent on this rack.

Here is a shot of a unsuspectingly steep decline at sunrise from a 10,000 foot campsite I "accidently" found...

Sin, Where TF you been man? Tell us more about this trip and them black wheels?

LOL.. Sorry, I have been neglecting my fellow 100`ers lately ! I ended up putting 285/75/16 Goodyear MTRs on my P-coated stock wheels, and last week I fitted an ARB winch-mount Bull-bar to the front end.. ( thank God I put the EMU t-bars on first, the front end dropped WELL over an inch with the addition of the bumper !) Now this beast rides like it should, that x-tra weight really helped the ride w/the bars adjusted back to the "former" height (before the ARB bar).No winch yet, though .

This shot is from yesterday, while "testing" the T-bars and shocks for proper damping..lol

If anyone is near the Phoenix area and wants something custom, PM me! I have built some interesting racks with lighting systems, camp tables, even one with a lounge on the roof! Wife hates it when I do anything without bribery, but I am pretty reasonable.

Lounge on the roof??? You gotta post pics after that statement!!!

i hit an ELK with my subaru and the yakima on my roof.. well the animal's brisket hit me just behind my passenger front light you could see a ding then she rolled onto my hood, craterd my windshield and went over the top of the car, (yakima rack with 3 bike trays and a kayak mount) and the rack took the abuse, kept some hair and there you go.. cant beat that, impact with elk and rack held up... (I'm just sayin)

I know alot of people dog yakima for off road use...But I have one on my 80, and if properly mounted, and tightened down, it can handle some ABUSE. We wheeled alot this summer in off camber situations just ramming that thing into pine trees, large braches, and it faired quite well. It will hold 200-300lbs...I would not go over that, but if you have a 100, are not planning on trashing it in the forest, you can get really set up for 300 bucks. I have kayaks, bikes, a large basket, and one of those molded plastic aerodynamic cargo gizmo's and they all come on and off easily, making it a snap to re-configure for different excursions. The caro holder is great for winter, and with 2 kids and a dog, space is always at a premium. I have hauled ass for days in a row down chattery dirt roads, nothing comes loose. Now I'd like something more bad ass for in the future...It would suck to break your rack on an outing..but for the money and functionality they are great. And I do like Yakima over Thule...but that's just an opinion.

You can do 3 rain gutter mounts per side with 3 cross bars, bolt anything to that **** and it's pretty stout.

Jeff
