@Bambi Girl Haven't been here for a while. Been dealing with some (really) serious spousal issues. On the up-side, it might just be that I've got some extra spare time in the future. So I might just be in for option 1 :D. Is that job offer still on??;)
Got extremely lucky on the hood. The partsguy I bought it from didn't know it was 1 of the last in europe. And I didn't feel the need to fill him in:rolleyes:. I now know why the original one rusted out so thoroughly. I guess seamsealer was in short supply in Japan???? Before painting, I spent almost 2 hours sealing all the seams to prevent it happening again.
Raingutter is in sceduled with the body so it'll probably be next year unless I get really bored over the winter. I'll be sure to contact you for advice.
What did Nat do to the body?? What's the gray stuff?
Nice work on the filleropening
You've got a great color on the split rims. I love mine, only they're a few shades to light in color. I'm not a real purist but I do believe they belong on our trucks

@Brad 1979 HJ45 , thanks bro

Finally found some time yesterday to get some work done. Alas I forgot my camera so sadly no pics. But I got her rolling on her own power again for the first time in 2 months:bounce::bounce:. I did found out that when troubleshooting on the EDIC, it is real easy to get acces with the front left fender off, but you DO have to remember to supply a ground to the EDIC relay:bang::censor::bang: dumb:moon:

Hi micdon
Hay those ground wires are important . Things do go better grounded or sometimes if not grounded get very hot even smoke hot.
Been in china all last week so no progress done on my 40 . Leaving today only to go on one weeks holidays so nothing much will happen next week.
Spouses . What do I say . For me I have not got one. Dogs and 40 series are the go.
In saying that I have Nat and she is my everything and life would be very sad with out her.
The offer is always there if you want to visit. I have a guest room both in Australia and china.
What did Nat use to remove the black stuff on the tub with ? A hot air gun and scraper. Then she washed it down with citrus juice. We use citrus juice for cleaning at the factory good stuff.
On Australia eBay a guy is selling a roof , sides and rear doors no rust for $800.00 I thought about you but the problem of freight would kill the deal.
Taxi coming must go.
Photo small dog China
Cheers

The build seems to be coming along well mate and cant wait to see the end product. Cute dog Bambi Girl. I am intrigued as what you do for a living travelling between here and China and also the amount of skill you have with all the work you are doing on your 40. Where did you get your complete rubber kit from and how much. Sorry to hijack the thread.

Hi micdon
Sorry did not answer all your questions.
Gray stuff is the Toyota factory primer.
Good hay.
Cheers

Cheers I saw that.

@Ken White : no probs. It's a forum not some stricktly regulated government thingy

@Bambi Girl : Don't be to surprised if I take you up on the offer in the not to distant future. About the roof, there is way around the shipping cost using a friend of a friend. But I kinda like the idea of fixing whatever is in my scope of skill, regardless the time/effort it takes. You can count yourself lucky with a friend like Nat. So hot air gun and scraper is the way to go then. Tht's one cute dog.

Hoping to get another few hours in next weekend. I promiss to bring the camera

Hi micdon
Back in the land down under.
Tell me in the not to distance future do you want a guest room in China or Australia of both?
The roof and side panels.
I will get a shipping quote to Holland for you . It will be a guild to see if feasible if not have a go on making one. Could be the start of a whole new life.
I can see it now
micdon s forty series rain gutter making factory.
I saying this I had better check if it sold or not.
Time for more photos.
Post a photo after you seal / cork the hood/ bonnet.
In return I will take a close up of the fuel filler In order for you to check out the metal folding.
Cheers

Finally ready for the yearly inspection:bounce::bounce:Dang this is exiting. I got the fender and aprons installed. Not to unhappy with the fitment. I wonder how it's going to be with the new grille and bonnet.

Don't really know what (if anything) I'm going to to with the LH indicator drooping to the left... It looks to me that the entire LH fender is sagging a bit

I think I'm keeping the old grille to see if i can repair it over the winter. Just to keep idle hands busy:rolleyes:

in311.jpg

The damage does far exceed how it looks in the picture.

And to justify replacing the bonnet..
ipbon.jpg

If you guys are wondering.... YES..that's yellow painted tape that is keeping the entire front RH corner together. Or to be more precise... The entire front is just tape painted yellow:cool:

And just one more to show the horror
ldqt.jpg

The inspection is planned for the 15th of juli. Man I can't wait

Did have a sleight mishap painting the bonnet though.....:censor:
0d4k.jpg

If you ever wondered what orangepeal looks like.. this is it.
I had the adjustments of the paint gun wayyyyy wrong. It was like shooting paint with a garden hose:bang:

To fix it, I opted to just apply more clearcoat, then sand it down again. It's one hell of a job but taking all paint off and starting over would take just as much time and more paint. Still working on it. It's a :censor: trying to keep from sanding through the clearcoat.

@Bambi Girl: that'll teach me to talk about stuff like I know anything:oops:
Next time i will NOT forget to take a pic of the seamsealed bottom side of the hood

Hi
Your back. And with lots of photos.
Lot of patches needed there. Think you need a lend of my folder.
What do you put all the rust down to?
I am well into the sanding of mine and so far no rust and very little dents. The result will be panels with little or no bog.
Before I brought my 40 series I must have looked at 100 or more cars and most had rust or bog. When I first saw Bambi the owner wanted $3000.00 over market price but I knew I would pick this up on the body repairs.
$3000.00 well spent.

What did you do to your bonnet?
AND After all your detailed instructions to me.
After following your instructions I primed the front panel.
What do you think.
A photo of the guard and the bonnet .
I will prime over the week end.
I ordered the rotisserie today . Sadly I will not be able to use till I get back from China.
I have one week of playing
Toyota before returning for 2 weeks this time.
Cheers

Micdon thats a shame about the bonnet and probably not as easy to fix as the orange peel but keep at it.

Bambi Girl those guards and bonnet are looking great cant wait to see the finished product. Are you going to paint her back to the original Free Born Red.

Hi Ken
Yes Freeborn Red is the color I will paint Bambi . The red ones go faster.
Just scouring the bonnet and using a real neat tool.
The disc is called 3" Lockit Gasket Removal Disc Course.
This small tool is idea for the bonnet vents.

@Bambi Girl : I would like to put it down to a technical issues like a too small compressor which caused variation in pressure during painting and painting in a too small booth. But honestly.. I was too exited and didn't take the time to properly adjust the gun after it's last cleaning. And had the paint volume wayy too high.
From the pics, it looks like you got a nice coat. Hope the tips helped.
The reason for all the rust is just the climate. Rust really loves Holland. If it's not raining, it either just stopped or it's about to start:doh:. Plus the PO lived by the sea, so that doesn't help. And finally, the last refurb the sponge got was a bodge job. NO new metal just glassfiber over rust, apply 1/2 inch bondo and away you go...:bang:.
During the winter I'll sandblast the doors and post before and after pics. I can only dream of bodypanels as straight as yours seem to be. I CAN NOT believe the condition of your grille. I was at my belgian friend 2 weeks ago. I saw 16..yes 16!! grilles and we found 1!!! that was repairable. The other 15 were too shot to even start on:crybaby:
Looks you found a nice way to get the paint off, without being to aggressive. I think you're going to love the rotisserie.

@Ken White : the orange peel is the issue. The matte part is where i started sanding it down. I started off with 240 grid. then 400, 800. Now up to 800 then 1200 and last 2000. Then polish... So just another 20 hours of sanding left:deadhorse:

Hi micdon
Studied your notes on spray painting again and very pleased with the latest results.
One of the good things about getting old is I seem to check then double check jobs before starting. I would rather fix at the beginning than repair at the end.
The preparation of the panels went like this.
80 grit on the whiz sander . Get to the hard to get places with the right angle 3 " sander. Dent knock the panel then re sand with 100 grit . Wipe panel with grease and wax remover , refer to your notes and paint.
A few photos for you . Before and after.

I just started chasing rustmonsters on the sponge. I decided to start with LH ambu-door.

Here is why

All this can be done with the most basic tooling. A vise, an anglegrinder, a BFH and of course a welder
