One of the old Body men that I worked with years ago, also a shop owner saw a guy blow up a battery from having the battery connected. I would expect he probably was welding right next to it.
Now on the other hand I too have welded on alot of vehicles without disconnecting the battery with no problems, I just keep the ground close to what I'm welding. Newer vehicles I always disconnect due to all the senative electronics just to be safe with all the air bags and computer junk. That is usually major structural repair and the battery comes out more often than not just for access.
FWIW I never disconnect my battery and I have had the same Optima redtop for 8 years!
I was finally getting the paint on my new cage yesterday, and I know that it will survive a roll now! I was by myself since Carl out of town, and I managed to roll the cage out of the truck by accident and gouged the whole side of my truck. I had just painted that side the day before too! I was able to repair that damage and get the cage painted but it ended up being a very long day.
I am starting my vacation on Thursday so I can wrap up all of the little details that the cage has taken away from, so I should be good to go Saturday to start the adventure without killing myself to get everything done. I still am having a hard time believing how much time a cage took to get it all of the way done. It is definitely worth it now that I see the end result, but there were times that I felt like quitting.

In the last 10 years I have learned that projects on vehicles is like a Mother giving birth. They partially forget all the miserable parts and end up giving birth again and maybe again and so forth. My first vehicle to actually wrench on was a '67 Corvair convetible. I have never had anyone to seriously "lean on" in times of wrenching trouble so this car provided many "moments". But what did I do, finish it and moved on to other vehicles and slowly learn and learned and here i am in Yota off road world. So you end up taking on bigger projects and will mute the pain in the ass moments for a nice end result.
Many projects would never get started if this wasn't the case.
I'm off to the barn!!
