I removed the valve cover to set the valves. After removing cover I noticed the area was extremely dirty with grime. I remove the entire assembly for cleaning. I marked all parts cleaned and put assembly back together. I believe the rocker supports are all position correctly with the larger hole towards the driver side. The unit will only go half way onto the studs. Having trouble getting this assembly back off. Any ideas?

There's a notch in the rocker shaft that has to be oriented correctly to slide over one of the studs, then the assy will slide down properly, without force. This is to insure all the oil holes line up so the rocker arms get lube from the oil circuit that goes thru one of the rocker towers.

Also the unit only goes fully down as the bolts are tightened per the service manual order. A little over here then over there... it only seats down in increments.

Thanks for the input. I was able to work the rocker assembly of with two small pry bars. I aligned the notches and the assembly went on smoothly from there. Removing trim/glass and then off to paint.

There are A and B rockers that should not get mixed up. Also there are holes in the rockers for oil to flow. Good idea to blow them out with an air gun while you have it apart. As mentioned above the notch in the rail lines up with one of the studs and the holes in the rail have to line up with oil holes in the rockers. The third (correction 4th support) is different and has a hole that lines up with a hole in the shaft. I think the stud may be different too (hollow with oil passage?) passage.

Since you moved it you may want to adjust the valves. EDIT; disclaimer...this info is for a 2f...not a 3fe so I'm not sure if they are similar.

All the rockers and supports were kept in order. I noticed after cleaning the two 14 mm bots were different. One has a thicker shaft down to the threads the other does not. Is there a reason for this or has this been caused by a prior removal? I don’t want to install incorrectly. Thanks

One of the Bolts should have a dimple on top - That one goes in the # tower.

I think it has something to do with oil flow since one of the towers is used for the oil circuit to the rockers.

Thanks for the pic of the rocker torque sequence. I had those two bolts reversed. Now corrected and engine runs fine. I plan to worm up engine tonight and set valves.
Thanks all, it really made the difference.
