Who has had experience with riv nuts?. I need to fasten some 1/8 to my Cruiser cargo floor above the fuel tank -can't get access behind.

I understand Riv Nuts come in aluminum, steel and SS so I was thinking steel for strength and ribbed for better grip to resist spinning. Any info would appreciated. I called Fastenal, but they don't carry them in house. ...

try fastener force one they are usually better stocked than fastenal. You can use a long bolt and a nut to crush them if you only have a few to do. thread the bolt in with the nut on it until its through the nutsert and then tighten the nut down to crush the sert. depending on the size of them the steel and especially SS can be hard to crush.

cant remember which company it was but they had a complete kit with the tool to install them for like $100 bucks... could have been acklands... was last year that the vendor was trying to sell me on it for the shop...

I saw a kit at princess auto a year or so ago.

I think it was about 20 bucks. Had the tool, probably the usual pa quality but worth a look if you're only putting in a few.

I got some aluminum ones from Fastener Force in the summer to mount my sub tank. I think the bolt size was 1/2 inch maybe? And as mentioned above, just used nut/bolt to tighten them. Actually a tool wouldn't have fit between the body and frame in my situation anyway.

Even though they are aluminum, when you get the bolt good and tight and imagine the amount of material that flares out on the back you realize they are pretty solid. The key is to make the initial hole in your body nice and tight so the stupid things don't spin when you're trying to tighten them!!!

Got steel Advel 'Nutserts" from Cascade Distributor, 661 Alpha Street not far from Metro - everyone else had limited selection and mostly aluminum and were more expensive for Rivnuts. Cascade is expanding their store- they also sell Jet tools. - some on sale till Nov.30
I would recommend them.

Thanks for the info guys ...

There are a lot of companies making them, we use them at work very often. Stay away from the Princess Auto ones unless you don't care about cheap ones (quality). They are made from aluminum but not that good of a grade to begin with. I used some, they strip easily, and sometimes end up spining in place.
Fastenal, Acklands, both carry descent brands, common are steel, zinc coated steel, stainless (bit of a pain to crimp due to the strenght of the metal), and aluminum. I'd stick to the steel and zinc coated steel (looks like good grade 8 bolts, that nice goldish colour). The tool for them is pricey, the cheap one from Princess kind of works for a little while then due to the cheap metal it wears out and seizes. The good ones are over $100 new. You can used a bolt and washers, large pain and time consuming, also you risk damaging the threads at times, works in limited space areas though.
I'm done......man I have a lot of random stuff in my head

Hi Matt - maybe this sort of thing would be good for a "Tech Section" in Backroader
Thx Glenn
