Just "stabbed" the rear third back into the axle. That sucked! Gunna feel it tomorrow..

No pics, but I made my own firewall steering shaft seal and installed it tonight. No more drafts...

I also eliminated the rubber isolator in the steering shaft and clocked the intermediate shaft flange. To fill the length difference of losing the isolator I used two shaft spacers and grade 10.8 metric bolts. Hopefully it will tighten up the steering...

Is The Isolator the same as the steering coupler disc, or rag joint ? I had the biggest Improvement In my steering from replacing all TREs and wheel bearings when doing the full knuckle rebuild. I even replaced the steering box, a few Banana's for me. Bad arthritis, tight spot 39 LB piece equals discomfort. I would be Interested to read how that elimination worked for you. My 95 steers great now 850 J with Metal Tech plates, Its like a car. Good Luck ! :)

View attachment 1159318 Pardon the Midwest petina... Got home from drill and set back to work on the 80. Still don't have a torque wrench for bolting down the head, so I finished stripping the rusty dysfunctional e-brake hardware from the axle. I'll build a tcase disc at some point. I'm about to dig into the rear diff to hopefully fix the non functional locker actuator.

I figure it's a good time while the driveshafts are out.
I know the level of skill required for fixing rusty parts. The % of mechanics that can complete the process drops significantly with Rust. Your doing a great job. When I first looked at your rear axle housing I said OMG I have never seen one that bad. Thinking the paint left on the rear diff was a HOLE, I enlarged and say the reality. Along with bad Arthritis, now my sight is going...! LOL :(

Thanks for the correction. I was referring to the rag joint.

The rust is a pain, but we are so used to it that it's shocking to see solid trucks elsewhere in the country.

My folks live in Zeeland Mi. near the Holland border. I grew up In Grandville till I was 13. Cars up there that need fixing usually require a grinder and a torch then wrenches to put It back together. LOL ! Keep up the good work..! :)

Toyota calls it a "Flexible Joint". I just replaced mine so I could carry the old one as a spare. $42 at onlinetoyotaparts.com. Can you post a pic of the "shaft spacers" you installed. I'm having trouble picturing this.

Progress has been slow lately due to hospital visits and tests for Mrs. 69lc. We also just had a nice weekend combined with my Dec AF drill and anniversary.

Today after work I blasted the exhaust manifold Y-pipe and picked up a can of Ceramicoat extreme temp header paint. It's not pretty, but the cracks I found after blasting are welded up and the coating is curing. Will post pics when it's dry.

A couple of years ago I added a 3-bolt junkyard flange to the pipe to allow easier exhaust maintenance.

I've been collecting 5/16" and 3/8" SS scrap plate from work to fab more 3-bolt flanges to go from the Y-pipe to a flange at the muffler, and one from the muffler to the tail pipe. All of the elbows and pipe will be .065" SS.

Last year when I had the head rebuilt I found that a bunch of the fuel injector plugs wouldn't clip onto the injectors like they were supposed to. We had a parts truck in the yard that supplied plug pigtails. I had to replace 5 of them. I'm just finishing crimping and soldering the pigtails. It's cold ...

I realized that I missed a double tranny line retainer that bolts to the belhousing. I fought for days to get that stupid retainer on. I ended up dropping the tranny crossmember again to give me more access to install it.

This required cutting off a crossmember frame bolt that wouldn't tighten as the weld nut in the frame had broken loose. I'll have to fix that when it's warm again.

No pics, sorry.
