That ladder looks sketchy! I am trying to picture 280 pounds on that thing in the middle of the night to take a pee. The tent itself looks really nice.

suggestion on reducing stress on the tent...

well, had a more serious look at the tent..

One thing that is quite noticeable is that when open, the center area of the inside frame bar of the open half (IOW 1/2 way between the hinges) is sagging quite a bit. I would think that when somebody is inside it's quite a bit more still. In that situation, the open half is supported only by the 2 hinges (not that thick) and the ladder. Imagine you have a big guy or a couple of people sitting right there. I would think that is stressing the hinges and bending the frame quite a bit. I think it is much better if that area is supported. I did it simply by sticking 1/2" of hard foam on top of the rack bar outside of the tent footprint. The frame of the open half is then resting on this, reducing greatly the stress on the hinges, I would think. I could see the 2 halves now aligning very well in height. I may do it later with a harder spacer.

Doug-

Let me know what you come up with for a Man holding ladder, I too am blessed with an overabundance of muscle... :D

I don't know if you remember me but we ran Elephant Hill at CM06 this year I was in the smurf blue 40.

Would love to hear what you come up with.

Hello Gentlemen,

I want to apologize for taking so long on not getting online and posting my thanks on IH8MUD Forum.
We are very thankful and overwhelmed with the amount of exposure we received or should I say are
receiving from IH8MUD for the CTT. It has defiantly been a learning experience for the company dealing
with the large number of calls and emails that IH8MUD generated. We have learned from it at will
work on better serving you if we didn’t the future. If for some reason we did not get back with you
via phone or email, please call me. I will try to take care of you.

We would also love to hear more feedback from you guys on the pros and cons
of the Car Top Tent. For example, changes that needs to be made, (ladder, rain fly) etc… What colors
you would like to see. Your input would be used in trying to build a solid, easy to use CTT. Thanks
to you guys and the love for the outdoors for putting the CTT in various climates and conditions of the
US. This will help us manufacture an even better tent for the future. If any of you have any questions,
Feel free to contact me at anytime. I finally got some help on this project so it can elevate some of
the work of trying to juggle the phone calls and emails. Don’t forget to send us those pictures. As
soon as we finish our proto type of the new tent and the redesign of the current CTT, I will post some
pics on IH8MUD. You guys have been a great bunch to work with and would definitely
love to work with you again. Let us know what we can do for you.
Thank you again.

Kind Regards,

Mel Flores

What is the suggested crossbar length to use for mounting the CTT?

Thanks

Finally cracked mine open today, and although I agree the design of the ladder leaves MUCH to desire, I felt it to be totally secure enough for me at 220-225#'s. My only other complaint is when folding it back together, the materials seems to "squish" out the sides and you have to kinda tuck it back in. Other then that, I would say well worth the $$ and it's better then expected.

Now that is a classy guy for ya! Thanks Mot, I'll be anxious to see what "santa" delivers:D

When are we going to see you with one of these RTT's? Put the kids up top and you and the:princess: can stay downstairs with the padded curtains;)

:D

Actually I've remained pretty quiet about this tent, but have already taken delivery at my in-laws' in Utah a couple of weeks ago. ;p

So.... :flipoff2:

Mot ;)

slept in mine last night. Mattress very comfy. Ventilation very good. Feels like a pretty solid base now. No wind so can't judge that yet. Ladder is not quite as bad as I anticipated from reading here. If I keep it vertical it feels solid enough (not that high, it's on my trailer). And yes, it takes half the total setup time, but only a minute or so. Pins are falling off left and right though. May need better rings.

I was supposed to take my scouts out to Goblin Valley in the San Rafael Swell on friday night here in utah, but I cancelled the trip due to the weather guy putting an arrow that showed where in utah you didn't want to be this weekend( pointed right where we were going). Apparently they got like 4" of rain there in the desert and caused all sorts of flash floods and washed out roads. I've had the tent on the 80 for about 3-4 weeks now just itching to use it. I left it on during all the hard rains we had friday night. after driving to work and back in some very hard rain I popped the tent open on saturday to find some water inside the tent. It looked like it had gone under the cover and up into the tent where the tent is rivited to the aluminum frame. there also seemed to be a little from the center portion where it was folded over. I'm going to buy a bunch of "Grip Sealer" or some other seam sealer this week and go to town on all the seams. I am also thinking of adhering some sort of waterproop material between the to halves of the base just to lesson the chances of water getting in from the side while driving. Any idea on how to seal the webbing material to the aluminum frame on that leading edge?
