I have a new to me 1990 HZJ77 and am looking for 16" wheel replacements that will fit a set of ~33's

Am trying to get up to speed on specs/dimensions so forgive my ignorance on this topic.

My situation is that the importer/PO put a set of Nomad wheels on the 77 and while I was doing R&R on the front axle noticed that there's only enough lug/stud for just over 5 threads of enguagement when torqued for an aluminum wheel (about 75ft#) and from what I gather the M12 x 1.5 requirement is like 8 theads minimum.

Any help in steering me towards a set of wheels that will work would be appreciated

Do your lugs insert from behind the disk brake like the 75? Why not just get longer studs?

Yep, they press in from the back and "appear" to be about 2.5" long

Finding correct spec would be the hard part, not to mention pulling hubs/etc on all 4 corners....not like I am not already doing that but....

Like I said, wheels are a topic I'm a bit ignorant on and my first concern is safety, I dont want to be that guy that has a wheel come off.

If you or someone else could push me in the right direction I'd be grateful

What I've been able to dig up based on short wheelbase version of 7x OEM spec is as follows but havent found specific dimensions on lug yet

  • Model Code / Japan : HZJ73HV
  • Generation: 70 Series [1984 .. 2007]
  • Production: [1989 .. 1999]
  • Sales regions: Japan
  • Power: 133 hp | 99 kW | 135 PS
  • Engine: I6 , Diesel
  • Center Bore / Hub Bore: 106.1 mm
  • Bolt Pattern (PCD): 6x139.7 (6x5.5)
  • Wheel Fasteners: Lug nuts
  • Thread Size: M12 x 1.5
  • Wheel Tightening Torque:
    unknown

WRT to studs the front OEM are

90942-02053

I believe the rears are 90942-02052

I supposed it would be an option to order one of each and start pulling measurements of knurled section etc and try to find some thing that is .75-1" longer

These are closer to 16 x 6. I wouldn't install 12-inch-wide tires on them, but then I wouldn't install 12-inch-wide tires on a 70 Series anyway. We run 235/85 x 16, which handled Australia, Tasmania, southern Africa, and North America perfectly.

Great wheels. I would run them in a heartbeat if I didn't like how they look with OEM flares.

Checked the tire size again

285/75 R16 which worked out to be 32.8" x 11.2"

I misread the micro diagram on amaya site last night and thought they were 16x8's (42601-60262-03) when they are 6's

Dammit

The nomads are labeled 16x8.OJ

Was hoping to be able to use these tires until I wear them out and get something narrower....tires are expensive

Yes. But you probably need some type of a lift.

~2' suspension replacement is on the to do this this summer....probably the OME kit and throw in additional air bags in rear

OGBeno,

What tires are you running on that?

Am finding my options for 255/85 16's for the 16x6's to be limited seemingly to mt tread and whats in your photo appears to me a little more moderate in tread (or worn)

I've run the following tires:

Toyo MT 255/85/16
Toyo M-55 255/85/16
Toyo AT2/3: 255/85/16

Agreed. My truck originally came to me with 15" OEM aluminums shod in 33x1250s. Handled terribly, braked terribly, accelerated terribly.

Now, on same rims with 33x1050s? Handling isnt terrible. 🤣

In a nutshell: unsprung weight bad. Pizza cutters good. 😉

Hello,

x2.

12.5 in. wide tires eat up axle bearings and seals as well.

Nothing like pizza cutters/skinny tires.
