Man I was close! Question though, instead of wiring it like you did could you run a stock 2F alt as a 1 wire just to charge the second battery?
 
I had to go dig up the old thread, but no.
They are not one wire alternators, you need at least the feed out and the "excite" wires. You do not however have to wire it anywhere near as complicated as I did. you could just take the white wire and run it to the second battery and splice the B-Y wire into any of the B-Ys that are in the engine bay.
This would probably overcharge the battery if there were not a constant drain on it though, I would have to wrap my head around the project again to figure that one out....
 
I didn't know overcharging a battery was a concern. I see all these guys running one wire alts just wiring it straight to their batteries, so what's the difference?

I am attempting to decipher your diagram on the other page for a third time and I think I got it this time. I've never been a big fan of electronics, :lol:
 
That is why I added the excite button. I dont have to have it charging all of the time. I trailer it most places now so overcharging in not an problem. I also had problems on the one wire with a very dead battery. It didnt want to excite on its own so this fixes that problem also.

The pulley has to be fairly small to get it to excite on low rpms. Makes it difficult to find the correct sized pulley.

You have a great system for the application, very straight forward and reliable, with easy to find replacement parts. The external excite button combined with an aux volt gauge would cover all the bases and be very reliable.

We built our systems for very different purposes, mine was way more difficult than it reasonably needed to be, but I wanted to accomplish the ultimate in redundancy and use exactly the same parts everywhere so that remote field repairs or changes-outs were a snap.

So I was looking at a few alts yesterday and it looks like a stock FZJ80 alt might fit in the old smog pump location. I believe they even came with double v-belt pulleys so it would be wicked easy to set it up in that respect, no custom pulley!

I'll try it out tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes. Any idea on the specs for a 1FZ alt?

I'm thinking that the 1FZ alternator may be 90 amps. There have been threads in the 80 series forum on swapping a 130/150 amp alternator from a Tundra or Sequoia into the FZJ80 so the 1FZ alt is well under 130 amps.

The double pulley may interfere with one of the other belts, if so just cut off the other V-groove on the pulley. A plug to match the alternator, maybe even with pigtails, should be available from the dealer. These latter two minor issues were once I had to deal with when installing a 130 amp Tundra alternator in place of the smog pump.

The Tundra alt is a bolt in for the 80 guys, so it has to be pretty close to the stock alt. Run into any issues there?

II have the plug so I'll just get some wires and make my own pigtail harness to wire in. Hopefully the 2F and 1FZ alts have similar wiring connections.

EDIT: Here's the 1FZ alt plug wiring and the 130/150 amp alt plug with the pinouts. Oh yeah, and they're 80 amps which is an upgrade over the 2F's 55. This is looking promising!

I remember reading that quite a while ago so I wonder why I didn't think to look that up. What I'd be doing with the stock 1FZ alt is exactly what you did there except my alt would be putting out 80 amps instead of 130-150. The difference in output isn't that much of a concern right now because I plan on running a York in the place of my original alt, so this will be an upgrade either way with the possibility of running the 150 amp model in the future.

The reason us 80 guys use the 130-150 Tundra alts is to power our Latte Ascent Protection Systems. You should be happy as it got you a free stock FZJ80 alt!:doh:

Damn that LAPS system takes a lot of power! Thanks for the alt Kenny! Now I gotta order a pulley.

is this still holding up for you? i'm thinking about doing the same as i don't really trust my gutted smog pump not to seize up on me sometime in the future
