My arms were bent and worn, and not actually keeping the blades pressed up against the glass. New ones from cruiserparts were expensive and would require shipping - OEM from toyota same deal.

Did some digging and found that 80 series arms are known to work with 60's. I then started looking for ones that were compatible with 80's. I got the suggestion to check 4Runner arms, and toddled off to the local parts yard.

I pulled mine off of a 97 4Runner. It took a 12mm socket and a small pocketknife.

Here's the write up with pictures on putting it back on my rig .

1. Use pocket knife on donor vehicle to remove the plastic nut cover cap. Place in pocket.
2. Use 12mm socket or wrench to remove nut.
3. If (as I had the luck of) it isn't rusted or gunked in place, gentle side to side movement will release the arm from the windshield motor mount.
4. Repeat for the other side. The 4Runner arms use the "J" style attachment on the front two - the rear uses the same odd screw on type as my 84. Needless to say, it's still there on the donor vehicle.

Ok. Now to the fun part with pictures.

1. Remove your existing wiper arm. Flip up the nut cover, and use the same 12mm wrench or socket to remove the nut. As you can see in the picture, they are about the same length.
2. Install the new wiper arm on the bolt. Antiseize if you live in a place where that would be nice, would be a good idea.
3. Thread the nut from the donor vehicle onto the bolt shaft. Note that it is slightly different size than the original (see picture - shiny = new from donor). Also the plastic nut cover is in this photo.
4. If you wish, place nice new rubber on wiper arm, in the usual fashion. I had to as the ones on there were completely rotted away.
5. Repeat for the other side.

Its that easy. Cost for me was $10.00 EACH for the arms, and $7.00 for the new blade assemblies - inserts would be about 3 bucks cheaper. They worked fine for test, will be having monsoons here pretty quick, will report back if I had to put my old ones back on.

The blades I picked up were 16", but you could easily put in 17", and maybe even 18"s. YMMV.

Nicely done. I may have to look into this as mine leave a streak right across my line of vision. You should put this in the "Under $50 Mod" thread.

Does it seem that there is more blade pressure with these wiper arms?

I've got some 20" rain-x wipers on my stock arms and they work well in everything other than super heavy rain, at which point, the driver's wiper skips over the larger bits of water on the windshield.

Yes, but YMMV as my springs were pretty worn. It's scraping the windshield pretty good, main problem is I've only had light "spitting" and not the torrential buckets I've been expecting. Also going to pickup a 18" blade and try it on the drivers side to see if there is any interference with 16" on the other side. Would like as large a clean patch as possible. If that doesn't work, will try 17" on both arms.

Note - when putting the arms on, you may want to mark the original location as I think I put mine on a bit low. It works, but doesn't seem to go as far left as the originals did. Will tweak that while playing around with blade size.

Will post results.

living in WA, it rains.

after 25 years, new inserts would not do it anymore, I get the pure rubber OEM Toyota with the crazy writing on the package, the other OEM inserts are not the same

I happen to have many wiper arms laying around from other 60's....some were better, some worse. gave up on that.

I figured, heck its only $20 for a new OEM wiper arm, lets just get 2 of them......

and guess what? they work like new.

stuff wears out, the arm's or springs had taken a set over the years...

also just bought 4(for each 60) of the new plastic nut covers, looks pretty now :)

18's work

No interruption on 18" on both arms.

If you can get the OEM arms for $20.00, then I would suggest doing it, but if not, this is a workable option - however, I wanted the standard J style mounting, dunno if you have to order later model arms to get that.

YMMV as usual, but nice to see we have options.

I am surprised that didn't occur to me :duh:

Just wanted to add in this is an awesome, cheap mod which is super easy and will make your life alot easier. Pair of 200x something 4 runner arms on ebay for $10 bucks, and some new 18" blades for $7 each and everything is working great. I'm amazed you got 20" blades on your 60, 18" blades almost go to the top of the windshield for me.

Now to swap out the rear wiper with something more modern!

I bought new arms and though I'd add part numbers to this thread:
OEM PN left 85190-90a02 right 85210-90a01, rear 85190-90a06,
98 4runner LH 85221-35080 RH 85211-35080

The 4 runner arms are a little longer (maybe 1 to 2 inches) with the RH side longer than the LH side. The OEM arms are the same length both sides (not sure why there are different part numbers). If I had it to do over again, I would have gotten 2each of the LH arms 85221-35080. Its $10 cheaper ($40 vs $50) and you don't need the extra length of the RH arm. This is for a US spec FJ62, but think they would apply to FJ60s too. Definitely improved hold down pressure compared with the old ones.

Cheers,

I just installed brand new 4Runner wiper arms (and covers) from the dealer. I ordered 2 LH arms, and installed them on my FJ62. Very smooth, no chattering when nearly dry - a huge improvement. My 'deal price' was $49/arm from the dealer, and the covers were $2.49/each.

@beno What is MUD cost on these? Mine seem to always chatter no matter what blades or how wet the windshield is.

Beno is on vacation . . . :crybaby:

Can we see pictures?

Do you have a part number for the covers?

OK, this is one killer upgrade. Did it about a month ago and could not be happier. I replaced 1 year old OEM arms and blades, the 4runner stuff works 10x better than even new OEM 60 stuff.

here they are mounted

part # 2 of each(I did the 2x LH arms)

lastly, get a bottle of this stuff(Spot X) to clean all the oil, grim and gunga off the windows, its amazing stuff, started using it 10+ years ago, it was made locally out of ground up oyster shells. Guess the local folks got bought up, but you can get it on amazon, you must use a non scratch pad and it takes some elbow grease, but the results are well worth it. Really work the area where the wippers overlap in the center area of window
