Slipped on the box wrench and blocked the other end. Gently stepped on it to depress the spring and could back it out with a few soft taps. bump. I really wish I had seen this before I removed my shifter in my 83' fj60.Make sure your junk is in neutral before taking the shifter out. Makes life easier when you have to put it back in.
