Removal ?

Ok so I'm trying to get the fenders prepped for some rust killer and primer, and I am stripping off the paint on the top. On the underside of the fenders theres a coating of some kind of rubberized sythetic waterproof junk and I want to get it off. Whats the easiest way? Will a regular paint stripper take it off or should I just take out the steel brush on the angle grinder and dig into it? Thanks Richard

or you could melt it off with a torch, but my vote is for the wheel b/c it smells soooo good and gets crap everywhere

The wheel it is but not until tomorrow worked like 4 or 5 hrs today now I have to go to bed so I can make it through the night shift.
Malphrus you have some free time thur of fri? Those are my off days so I'll be busting ass on the cruiser and drinking a few brews here at the house if you want to come check it out or pitch in let me know.

There is an eaiser way....

Dont get me wrong, the wheel will work great but I got real bored doing it on mine. So I instead used Marhyde Aircraft Stripper and let it do my job while I surfed on here for 20 min. Put on a nice thick coat and it ate through 95% of everything. Then I spent another 5 min scraping it with a putty knife. 1 or 2 small spots needed a second coat but I found it alot eaiser. Just my .02

Yep, Aircract Remover. Takes off everything down to bare steel.

yeah, so i just remembered that i'm workin at 5:30 both friday and saturday mornings at the bagel shop....soooo that sucks big time, but i'll still come out and do what i can for as long as i can

Malphrus 5:30 is early as heck thats almost like working my night shift. Yeah man if you want to come out that'd be cool. I'm just gonna work all day long on thur and then sleep at night instead of the day like normal. So I should be humping it until about probably like 7-8 at night maybe later. I'm probably gonna be cutting out some panels for the floor and maybe welding them in. Maybe fabricating some other pieces that need to be made along the read roof supports. I don't know still a lot to do.

All I know is you better have that thing sanded and primmed and all welded up by the time I get back from Canada so we can drop the engine in and go abuse it like you should on the trails. Good luck with all the work......

HAHAHA, I hope so too man. But I wouldnt bet on it. Although thur and fri I should get a lot of work done. I need to get up there to spartanburg and check the engine out. I can't get all the work done though. Got to save you a little something to do Virgo. Also I got some parts I want you to paint at some point man I'll pay you some money for it. Also I put in the auction that I could paint that heater for an extra $12 so if they want it painted theres $12 in it for you. Have a kick @ss time in canada.

Paint thinner melts that goo pretty good by itself. I tried aircraft paint stripper and a wire wheel, and I had the best luck pouring thinner into the fender when it was upside down and letting it sit for a while, them power washing and pouring thinner in again. I managed to get it down to the factory primer without removing it.

Did the Marhyde thing on mine. That stuff tears sh__ up. Especially if you get it in your eyes, woohoo, where the he__ is that faucet?

Thanks for all the help guys. I have used the Marhyde on the hood and stuff and it eats paint in like 15 seconds. I didnt have any left though. So I was debating buying more. I think I am though that and the paint/rust stripping discs I have should do the job.

Yeah man, I'll just give you some directions its easy as heck to find and if you can get out here then just come on out.
Going toward bilo from campus take the first right before crossing over 123. About 100 yards past napa directly across from the riviera. That will put you onto frontage rd. Follow frontage rd about .5 miles. On your right is a church (low brick bldg). Turn right that puts you on rippleview. Follow rippleview it will curve left then right. Split level blue gray house on the corner is ours. Cruiser will probably be pushed out into the driveway if im working on it.

i'm right around there too, in fort hill commons, on 93 between the pike house and the napa

Yeah man I ride my rd bike past their house and look at the 40 and 55 like all the time, well until it got a flat. But yeah were right by them. So you should have no problem finding it come on out thur if you get a chance I'll be here working all day for sure.
