Remote Starter

How do I hook this thing up? I connected it to the (+) battery connection and the little wire connection on the right of the starter solenoid. I then pulled the coil wire to the distributor and negative coil wire. Nothing happened. Did I screw up?

hook the plus up to the post with the battery cable, slid the connector off the terminal to the left of your picture and connect the other side. basically, when you press the switch your shorting those two together and that will make the starter go even when the key is off. Remember to put the connector back on or your key won't engage the starter.

OK. Got it to work. Thanks. Now to make sense of the compression numbers....

Yes, the starter is filthy. It's been like that since I bought the rig, three years ago. It works, so there's no point in messing with it.

The wire on the right is what Toyota referred to as an 'exciter' wire. It was designed to 'steal' 12 volts from the starter and boost the coil during startup. IIRC, it was used from 73 to 78 and then abandoned.

For years you could get the starter either with or without the extra wire. IMO, if you didn't have an ignitor, you didn't need one.

Now Toyota has superceded all early starters to the gear reduction model, which does not have the provision. Technically, this is a violation of emissions rules, since it will modify the spark profile, but the BAR is clueless.
