So I am trying to decide which cot to go with. Been using air mattresses and they all suck. Sleep on a Tempurpedic (sp?) at home. I love it! But when camping, I haven't found anything pad or mattress wise that is good enough. I'm a big guy 6'3" 240 right now. Need to lose a couple, but whatever. So sleeping on the ground with back problems also is a no go. Anybody have recommendations on cots? I've have it narrowed down to

REI's comfort cot:

Or Cabela's XL Outfitter:

And Pad:

I'm in the military and those cots suck! A little better than air mattress but just. Just wondering if anybody had used either of these setups?

Oh yeah, and I'm half the country away from an REI store and an hour and half away from a Cabela's so I can't just go check them out...

REI is not supportive of our sport, I do not buy from them.

In my experience cots sleep cold unless you have some kind of pad. Take a look at Thermarest self inflating pads. The base camp models are pretty big, it would probably work well for you with or without a cot.

That's the second time I have seen someone say something about REI like that. In my next of the woods, being cold isn't a problem we have to deal with for all but about 2 months out of the year. I have pads that I can use on any cot I get.

double high Coleman air mattress from Wallyworld....plus a 12v pump...not battery operated

I've tried. Not too bad, a little tippy.

Clicking this link gets me to the home page. What exactly are you wanting me to check out?

Well because I am probably the worlds worst at impulse buying, (You should see how many bags of jerky and hand sanitizer and gum I have from the checkout line!) I bought the REI comfort and a $40 army knock off from Amazon. Let me say that the 30 minutes I spent laying down on both of them after setting them up, the REI might be the most comfortable thing next to a hammock and my bed! Not too mention that is sets up as easy as unfolding a lawn chair! The other military knock off one sucks, but will be good for my boy. This is assuming that I will be able to get both of them to fit in the tent! Maybe I will set it up tomorrow...oh wait...it's going to be a BILLION degrees again tomorrow!

Get a Kamp rite tent cot and a 5 inch memory foam pad for about $150 each.
The tent comes in handy to keep the rain and bugs out.

Yeah I've looked at those. I think they are pretty cool. But thought they only come in a single or double size. Kinda limits using it with the family. I'm thinking the comfort cot was the right choice.

I have a Cabelas Alaskan. The XL my friend has we refer to as the dolphin sling.

I used to sleep on the ground, but it was much easier in the desert to use the cot (especially on rocky terrain in the heat--no snakes to worry about as much). I use a thermarest with it.

The wife and I both have the big Thermarest self-inflating mattresses. There are nicer, cushier ones out now, which I haven't tried. By itself, it doesn't really work for me, as I have a complex variety of neck, spinal, and thoracic issues that really like being in the waterbed at home. What I do is take a closed-cell foam pad and put it underneath the self-inflating mattress. The combination is not quite home-style, but it works for me.

It helps to have a LandCruiser to haul all this stuff around in, of course...:rimshot:beer:

I haven't spent the night in the comfort cot yet, but I already ordered another one for the wife. The kids have toddler blow up mattress for the young'n and my 8 year old has the military style one. I also have a Hennessey hammock that I haven't been able spend the night in either! Hopefully next week I will get a chance to try them both when we go camping!

I do have an REI 3.5" extra large camp bed that is great, both quality of product and comfort. I bought it used years ago but I buy most all my gear used. Save a ton of money that way and most people barely use outdoor gear.

Also have 2 slumberjack self inflating pads that are not bad. Good quality but not as comfortable as the REI. Like these.

Got my wife the Therm-a-rest Dreamtime and she loves it. She likes it a lot more than the REI for comfort.

Good luck.
