Justine at Redline has offered to host some tech meeting. We need to get together a list of possible subjects then vote on which we want to do first. Some of the suggestions from the meeting are

Trail Side repairs
Battery Welding
Brake replacement
Front Axel rebuild
Valve adjustment

Post your your ideas then I'll set up a Poll

resetting a bead with a ratchet strap is something I would like to try. As cool as the starter fluid trick is I am more likely to have the strap on the trail than a can of starter fluid.

I don't know if there is any reliable trail side repair for a leaking coolant hose.

Cheap and effective dual battery set up

Doug had a good idea that we make the Tech Sessions a quarterly event.

It was agreed upon at the meeting that the first of these would be held sometime in July and would cover trail repairs (reseating beads, battery welding, etc.).

So clear your entire July calender now!

That's cuz you don't drive a 40 - always have a can in mine!

I'd like to see unseating a bead also - general trail emergency trail repair. There was an article in Overland Journal a while back and I have a few tires around that I'd be willing to donate to the cause.

I'll add replacing a valve stem also. I've heard of torn valve stems several times, and saw it happen on Eagle Rock a few years ago. But don't know how to do it.

I've heard good things about this stuff: http://www.rescuetape.com/

Keep a roll in the truck, but haven't had to try it yet.

At this month's meeting we will work on reseating a tire bead. I spoke with Justin and he has some spare tires we can practice on.

Ok we had some fun with Trail side repairs and a session on Battery welding. Lots of fun and we didn't hurt anyone.

I still want to do the Valve adjustment but not many members have a 2F so this doesn't have wide appeal. Post up your suggestions and we can vote.

The process for adjusting valves on a 2F is the same as many vehicles, so it would be beneficial. When I talk to people about adjusting their valves or pulling a distributer, I always seem to lose them at finding top dead center. Learning how to do that also correlates to many different vehicles, other than the timing marks being on the flywheel on the 2F.

Thanks for the show of support Luke. I was over at Redline yesterday checking the compression on the old rig. The Spark Plugs were very tan so running too lean. Justin Suggested I needed to adjust the valves every 6K miles so learning to do this myself would definately be beneficial to keeping the old rig running right.

The last meeting we talked "Tech Meeting" ideas. Pretty sure we're going with 2F valve adjustment. I think I remember Justin saying it would take about an hour. I'll get a hold of him to see what month would be good for him.

I think that an hour would be correct if we just hit the basics, touch on the tricky points, and adjust one cylinder. I don't think doing an adjustment on all six cylinders would be feasible. By the time we get the rig in the bay, air cleaner off, vacuum lines labeled and moved, valve cover off, timing cover open, find the flywheel marks, and all the prep work done, you've lost an hour or more. Getting the engine to TDC will be almost a lesson in itself. We also have to consider that we can't be using a shop and its tools to do no cost valve adjustments when they normally charge time for such a thing, so we'll have to keep it relatively simple, in an informative way :)

I was planning on using my 40 for the Valve adjustment but Got a work thing going on so I'm not sure I can make the meeting. Can it wait until May?

OK......since we'll be headed back to Redline in the near future, I've been thinking we should have another Tech Session soon.

I know some issues came up with the valve adjustment, so anyone have any other ideas they'd like to see? The welding with two batteries was cool, as was reseating beads (both the "safe" way and the flammable way).

Here's what's left of Doug's first list:
Trail Side repairs
Battery Welding
Brake replacement
Front Axel rebuild
Valve adjustment

When thinking of a tech night idea, I think we should keep in mind that Justin works really hard and has a little kiddo waiting at home for him.

Oh... and if we want a low key "Tech Night", (maybe before the Christmas Tree Runs) we could watch my copy of Bill Burke's "Getting UNStuck". Good video with good info. (http://www.4x4books.com/bbgus.htm)

Some popcorn, soda pop, and a 4X4 video... what could be better? :hillbilly:

I need to replace both inner axle seals, repack etc. If you need a donor, it goes pretty quick most of the time.. Down side is I can't get there before 8 or 9pm during the week. Was going to do it before Blanca but it will have to wait til after. Ever meet on a weekend?

I'd like to help with that so I can learn the procedure. Perhaps we can schedule a special Saturday tech meeting. Not sure we can use the Redline Facility so may need an alternate shop.
