Grew up around labs, now have a chocolate lab she's the best dog I've ever had period. I could never ask for a better friend. Thinking about a Bernese Mountain Dog though, don't know too much about them, but the ones I've met seem to be really nice around both people and other dogs.
Both my pups are rescues, one a Lab mix and the other a German Shepherd. Labs are easy -- they want nothing more than to lay around and be your friend. Shepherds are working dogs and tend to want to run the house. IMO, IME, etc.
I completely agree with what others have said about the shelters. I'll never pay hundreds of dollars at a breeder or a pet store when there are thousands of perfectly good dogs that are almost free. Besides, there's a good feeling that goes with knowing what you did for them. The dogs seem to know, too.

Get a pound dog. They get puppies sometimes, and get the fattest, laziest one there. The one that doesn't even wake up when you come to the cage. They make the best ones. Mine goes everywhere with me, camping, hiking, climbing. He can outhike me anyday. I mean he is 4-wheel drive!

the best dog i ever had and still have(at my aunt and uncle's) is a white lab/great pyranees mix. He is now about 120 pounds but with plenty of excercise he stayed right at 100 pounds of muscle. He is a great watch dog and the smartest dog i have ever had. he liked to ride in the back of the truck or in the cab as he does now. He likes to run beside you while you are riding 4wheelers.
He had the pyranees attitude(i protect whats in my property but bite as a last resort) and he had the playfulness of a lab.
Great dog and he is almost 12 years old and still held his own with a 2-3 year old bullmastiff/pit bull mix just the other day. If his teeth wouldn't have been wore off from eating so much they said he wouldve whooped the ole pit.

I like mutts the best. That way you can try and mix a few good breads and get the best of a few worlds.

I have heard great things about them. Everyone I've talked to tells me Labradoodles are the best of both worlds. The intelligence and temperment of a Standard, the strength and endurance of a lab. Up side, they don't shed, down side, they require grooming.Lito said:

Unless you live a very high energy lifestyle I'd stay away from the working breeds like border collies or huskeys. They need a lot of excersize and they need a purpose (job) to be happy.
Most of the sporting breeds will adapt to your lifestyle. They are bred as hunters first and companions second.
Just my 0.02 worth.
How could anybody not love chesapeake bay retriever puppies?!
