Fully rebuilt T-case and just took it for a test drive. With the lever in 2wd high it's in low, noticed right away when I when to take off in 1st.

I read the threads on modifying the linkage bracketry to be able to shift into 2wd low and I did not do this. I assume it got put into 2wd low somehow and when I put the linkage on now it's not able to be switched?

Do I just need to remove the linkage and physically move it into 2wd high then re-assemble?

I would guess you put the small linkage with the rose joint on upside down.

Thanks i'll check it out. You talking about the one coming off the T-case that has the ball and socket on it? I'm pretty sure I had it on correctly, but could the lever have just been in the wrong position when I attached it to the main linkage?

Yes, the pucture above shows it installed correctly. It does not matter what state the transfer is in when you attach the linkage.

When you installed the rear case, did you check that the high/low range shifter going through the case correctly engaged the shift fork head? It's possible to have it totally misaligned and install the rear case normally. Then you get no high/low selection.

Ok so I took the linkage apart and the arm on the tc for high low selection just moves freely back and forth so I think it’s not engaged.

Question any chance of removing the piece that holds the selector, drop it down far enough to engage the shifter then reinstalling the holder?
Or do cases have to be split?

Time to get the tools out - you need to split the case again.

It would be worth getting a factory service manual to follow, as I believe it tells you which gear the transfer should be in during reassembly.

You probably already know, but all this can be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle.

Before stripping everything down, see if you can drop the shaft in a little and get it into position. When I was building my first transfer case, I got the shaft in the wrong position and came to the conclusion that the back of the case had to come off to get it right, but try yourself. I was doing it dry (no sealant) on a stand, so it was no work at all to just pull the case off. Maybe it is possible with the case in place after all, but I don't think it will work.

Try resetting the high-low shifter from above first. I've done it a couple of times before I learned to do it the correct. Worst that can happen is that the shaft drops into the t-case and you have to split it to fix it, to do it by the FSM you'll have to split it anyway.

I was wondering if you took the PTO cover plate off you could maybe see the lever

I don't think so, unless it had dropped out.

Went through a factory manual it does not specify which gear it needs to be in during assembly.

Just says "turn the select lever counterclockwise and engage the lever tip to the shaft groove".

You already know the answer although you’re hoping for somebody to tell you differently ….

Pull the rear case half. Sure it’s a little bit of work but it’s the way you have to do it.
