I’m trying to rebuild a 1977 that I bought that was rusted out. I have taken it apart and started rebuilding it on a new frame. And I need lots of help as I really am in over my head.

I have a 1978 aisin carb that needs to be rebuilt. I assume that is better than the Rockwell on it now? I also have an oem distributor which is missing the cap, rotor and the wiring is a mess. Is there a way to rebuild these and make them work well with changing altitudes and inclines (my use case scenario)? What parts are available and needed for the distributor? Or should I just skip these, bite the bullet, cry once and just get an EFI setup? Thank you kindly for any advice.

I would not put efi on an unknown engine because any issues it could have will be worse.

There are a few carb rebuilders on here and distributor rebuilders, but they aren’t very hard to do yourself. A few good vendors on here that carry the parts needed as well.

Rebuild and move on, this question is asked almost daily. Download 2F service manual, go step by step. Literally the easiest and most well-thought out vehicles on the planet for reliability. Don't ruin their good reputation with substandard repairs or parts.

My 72 came to to me in 82. It had a Rochester carb and a Delco distributor. I had to free up the leather accelerator pump cup back in the early 2000's. I worked on the slop in the shaft of the advance assembly around that same time. Last year I bought a chinesium Delco off Amoron $130. Runs great with real Delco points/condenser/cap and wires from my old unit.

I might just buy the chinesium Rochester from Amoron.

I like straight mechanical advance - rpms determine the advance; no vacuum advance/retard.
I like my header with a hot water heat riser for the carb. I run a diode electric fuel pump - they cost like $10 and last 10 years.

The vendors here are great for the most part. There are folks that fix things too. No clue I fix my own stuff. READ

Those both look like good candidates for refurbishing.

Has your rig been “desmogged” ? If so, there could be implications for your carb rebuild.

Good question and I appreciate the insight. I certainly had not thought ahead about that. Thank you for saving me from later pain. There is so much that I don't know on these 40s but I am going to have fun learning, making mistakes and making memories with my boys. And if I get to drive it at the end, that will be glorious.

I would likely not rebuild the smog system. I have some of the parts but I doubt all of them. At this point, I pretty much have an engine mounted on the frame/suspension. I wanted to get all the engine pieces back on and then perform a compression test. The engine turns over easily but I assume hasn't run since ~2017 when it was last registered.
