Zane -
Just saw this write up. Looks very nice!

I saw Zane's very cherry locked 40th a few months ago. It's one of the nicest 80's I've seen - clean and well taken care of.

Now of course I am thinking about making one of these cool storage systems and I am pondering what the best layout would be as far as what makes sense for storage and using the room as effeciently as possible.

Any ideas on the best design (drawer size, additional compartments and what not)

Weight is an important consideration for me, a low profile is important, as is support for my sleeping arrangement. I have a nice full size Simmmons mattress that unrolls nicely to fit when the passenger seats are folded down.

I made this one about 6 years ago with lighterweight 1/2 plywood and reinforcement for strength and support. I also took advantage of tight fitting the Hi-lift bar, tool boxes(only one is shown), and a tote to add support. The front section is actually a box with 2 12" woofers and 2 500 watt amplifiers.

My next storage system will be even lighter with a profile that is 2 inches lower than this one. I want the top of the box to be level with the top of the fender wells which will also give us more head room when sleeping. I am replacing the woofers with one that is more space efficient and lighter, having a cleaner fit/finish, and using a tool set contained in a flat box.

How did you get that contour action on the top of your drawer system. I am currently working on mine and have not seen that before. I was trying to figure out how you shaped your wood?

Thanks in Advance.

fjfar80,

I used cardboard and simply cut it to fit then used it as a template to trace on the plywood. I then used a jig saw to cut out the shape. I got very lucky that it fit perfectly on the first shot, but you could easily shave off a little here than there to make it fit. I also used a router to round off the edges a bit. If you don’t get it perfect it really does not matter because the carpet will be tucked in between the side panels and the plywood filling in any gaps.

Jason,

Thanks and it was great meeting you at Flat Nasty... Next time you are in KC look me up!

I don't get it.
Where do you put the jog stroller and tricycles?
Where does the cooler go?
But seriously, thats some fancy draws you got there.
Once my girls grow up a little more I may end up making some.

$$$$ drawers

those drawers are great. i had to buy mine because i have no skills... the outback drawer system. not worth the money IMHO

Beautiful cargo set-up!!! Like the checkerplate - looks pretty AND durable!!!

Something similar in the works as a winter project for me - hopefully before River Shiver in Alberta, Canada. My 80 came with a lovely set of camp cupboards and a Jap spec unidentified fuel 1 burner stove...oh yeah... and a 1" deep dishwashing sink - VERY NICE!!

Anyways....great job!!!

I wanted to wrap up my write up by providing some pictures of the latching mechanism that I choose to go with for the rear drawers. I decided to go with window latches from Home Depot. They were really cheep and seem to work VERY well. I also went with piano hinges for the forward most storage doors and flush marine door handles (purchased at Boaters World) for them as well.

Happy to answer any questions for those that are looking to build there own rear storage solution.

Thanks

Excellent job, congrats.

I'm a little concern about the window latches. When you're facing uphill with heavy drawers, will the latches be able to hold the drawer shut? Perhaps if you used small nuts and bolts instead of wood screws, there's a fighting chance!

Friendly observation.

Cheers!

With that latch, do you have to open the latch before closing the drawer? Or is it spring loaded so that you can shut the drawer and it automatically clasps like a door latch?

No, the latch is not spring loaded. You unlatch to open the drawer and then you close the drawer and re-latch. The extra few seconds it takes has not been inconvenient at all and is much easier than other latch options I have seen that require manual locking and unlocking.

Great work...

Zane,

Great looking box. I especially like the forwaed access hatches. Do the window latches pull the drawer slightly sideways to lock?

Spare tire carrier. Did you install this, have it done, PO?

I'm curious about how long it took, did you have to weld a plate to the frame for support? This looks like a reasonable mod that puts the spare up nicely without having to fork out $1500 for a new bumper.

Taylor,

Yes the latch pulls the door to the side "slightly" and seem to be very strong.

As for the Spare Tire Carrier, Yes I fabed that up myself as well. You can go to my write up on the build up at: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=79390 . PM me with any questions you may have.

Thanks

ZZ

Hmm...

That's impressive. I'm not sure I want to give up the pintle hook position...

Got anyalternate solutions for that?

Wow Zane- Excellent work!

I was searching to see how people are attaching storage to the floor of the truck and found this thread. Just need to carpet and attach mine to the floor. Compared to yours mine looks like a wood box.

Wait, it is a wood box :D
